Nude Rat Model

The nude rat model is an athymic, immunodeficient laboratory rat used to study human cells, tissues, and engineered implants in vivo. A mutation affecting thymic development, commonly linked to the Foxn1 pathway, prevents normal T-cell maturation and produces reduced immune rejection, while the animals also typically lack hair. This permissive environment allows researchers to implant human tumors, stem-cell-derived constructs, biomaterials, or tissue-engineered grafts and monitor their survival, vascularization, integration, and function. In bioengineering, nude rats provide a valuable bridge between small-animal experiments and clinical translation by enabling assessment of regenerative therapies and device performance under physiologically relevant conditions.

In the pathogenesis of bone metastasis, angiogenesis is a crucial process and therefore represents a target for imaging and therapy. Here, we present a rat model of site-specific breast cancer bone metastasis and describe strategies to non-invasively image angiogenesis in vivo using magnetic resonance imaging, volumetric computed tomography and ultrasound.

Creation of Reversible Cholestatic Rat Model

2011

Cholestasis is a clinical condition commonly encountered by both surgeons and gastroenterologists. Creation of a reversible cholestatic rat model can be challenging in view of the smaller size and unique hepatopancreatobiliary anatomy in rats. This video article demonstrates the creation of a reversible cholestatic model.
