Hibernating Myocardium

Hibernating myocardium is a reversible state in which heart muscle reduces its contractile activity in response to chronically limited blood flow, conserving energy while remaining viable. In this condition, sustained hypoperfusion alters myocardial metabolism and function, but restoration of adequate perfusion can recover contraction and distinguish living tissue from irreversible scar. In bioengineering, studying hibernating myocardium supports the development of tissue models, computational simulations, imaging-based assessment tools, and engineered therapies for ischemic heart disease. These approaches help clarify how oxygen delivery, cellular energetics, mechanical stress, and vascular repair influence cardiac recovery and guide strategies to preserve or restore myocardial function.

Supramolecular hydrogelators based on ureido-pyrimidinones allow full control over the macroscopic gel properties and the sol–gel switching behavior using pH. Here, we present a protocol for formulating and injecting such a supramolecular hydrogelator via a catheter delivery system for local delivery directly in relevant areas in the pig heart.
