Global Health Diagnostics

Global health diagnostics are tests and diagnostic systems used to detect disease, guide treatment, and monitor health across diverse populations and settings, especially where laboratory resources are limited. They work by analyzing clinical samples for pathogen-specific nucleic acids, antigens, antibodies, or host biomarkers through methods such as microscopy, immunoassays, and molecular testing. Effective diagnostic programs combine analytical accuracy with practical requirements including affordability, portability, rapid turnaround, quality assurance, and interpretation within local epidemiology. In biology and public health, these tools support outbreak surveillance, infectious-disease control, antimicrobial stewardship, and equitable access to care while strengthening research on disease transmission and responses to interventions.
