Neuropathological Characterization

Neuropathological characterization is the systematic examination of nervous system structure and function to identify abnormalities associated with disease, injury, or neurodegeneration. It combines clinical information with methods such as gross examination, histology, immunohistochemistry, molecular testing, and microscopic analysis to assess changes in neurons, glial cells, synapses, and brain regions. In neuroscience, these approaches reveal patterns of neuronal loss, protein accumulation, inflammation, vascular damage, and tissue degeneration that help distinguish disorders and clarify disease mechanisms. The resulting evidence supports diagnosis, disease classification, research into therapeutic targets, and evaluation of how experimental treatments affect nervous system pathology.

This report outlines a simple approach to successfully induce experimental autoimmune neuritis (EAN) using the myelin protein zero (P0)180-199 peptide in combination with Freund's complete adjuvant and pertussis toxin. We present a sophisticated paradigm capable of accurately assessing the extent of functional deficits and neuropathology that occur in this EAN.

Described here is a staged, behavioral screening approach that can be used to screen for compounds that exhibit in vivo efficacy on cognitive and functional motor behaviors in transgenic mouse models of β-amyloidosis and tauopathy. These methods are optimized to screen compounds for activity in short-term and working memory tasks.

The generation, purification and cell invasion of intracellular, cytoplasmic full length DISC1 protein aggresomes from cell cultures and of a labeled, multimeric recombinant DISC1 protein fragment in E. coli are described. Cell invasiveness is shown for recipient cells in cell culture and for neurons in vivo after stereotactical brain inoculation.

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. The objective of this experiment is to achieve hands-on experience with different magnetic components from design and material perspectives. This experiment covers B-H curves of magnetic material and inductor design through identifying unknown design factors. The B-H curve of a magnetic element, such as an inductor or transformer, is a characteristic of the magnetic material forming the core around...
