Vi presenterar ett protokoll som använder funktionell magnetisk resonanstomografi att undersöka neurala korrelat till minnet som förbättrar effekten av känslor. Detta protokoll möjliggör identifiering av hjärnans aktivitet specifikt kopplade till minne-relaterade bearbetning, i motsats till mer allmänna perceptuella behandling, och kan användas med friska och kliniska populationer.
Känslomässiga händelser tenderar att vara bättre ihågkommen än icke-emotionella händelser 1,2. Ett mål av kognitiva och affektiva neuroforskare är att förstå de neurala mekanismerna bakom detta ökad påverkan av känslor på minnet. En metod som har visat sig särskilt inflytelserika i utredningen av minnet som förbättrar effekten av känslor är den så kallade efterföljande minne paradigm (SMP). Denna metod användes ursprungligen för att undersöka neurala korrelat av icke-emotionella minnen 3, och på senare tid vi och andra tillämpas även den framgångsrikt till studier av emotionella minne (över 4, 5-7). Här beskriver vi ett protokoll som gör undersökning av neurala korrelat av minnet som förbättrar effekten av känslor med hjälp av SMP i samband med event-relaterade funktionell magnetresonanstomografi (fMRI). Ett viktigt inslag i SMP är att det tillåter separation av hjärnans aktivitet specifikt i samband med minnet från mer allmänna verksamhet i samband med perception. Dessutom i samband med att studera betydelsen av känslomässiga stimuli, kan SMP identifiering av områden i hjärnan vars verksamhet mottagliga för emotionella modulering av både allmän / perceptuella och minne-specifik behandling. Detta protokoll kan användas på friska försökspersoner 8-15, samt i kliniska patienter där det finns förändringar i neurala korrelat av känslor uppfattning och fördomar i minnas känslomässiga händelser, såsom de som lider av depression och posttraumatiskt stressyndrom (PTSD ) 16, 17.
Denna experimentella protokollet möjliggör undersökning av neurala korrelat av minnet som förbättrar effekten av känslor, genom att specifikt skilja minnet-relaterade hjärnaktivitet som är mottagliga för modulering av känslor från aktivitet i hjärnan känsliga för känslor modulering under allmänt / perceptuella bearbetning.
