Q-tof Mass Spectrometry

Q-TOF mass spectrometry is a high-resolution analytical method that identifies and characterizes molecules by measuring the mass-to-charge ratios of their ions, making it valuable for analyzing complex biological samples. In this instrument, a quadrupole filters or selects ions for transmission, while a time-of-flight analyzer determines their masses from the time they require to reach a detector; fragmentation can provide structural information through tandem mass spectrometry. In biology, Q-TOF systems support proteomics, metabolomics, lipid analysis, and biomarker research by enabling accurate-mass measurements, molecular identification, and characterization of complex mixtures.

Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) is a mass spectrometry ion source ideal for the analysis of biomolecules. Instead of ionizing compounds in the gaseous state, samples are embedded in a matrix, which is struck by a laser. The matrix absorbs the majority of the energy; some of this energy is then transferred to the sample, which ionizes as a result. Sample ions can then be identified using a time-of-flight analyzer (TOF). This video covers principles of MALDI-TOF, including...

Mass spectrometry is a powerful characterization technique that can identify and separate a wide variety of compounds ranging from chemical to biological entities, based on their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z). The instruments that allow this detection, known as mass spectrometers, have three components: an ion source, a mass analyzer, and a detector. These spectrometers differ based on the nature of their ion source and analyzers.Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) is a commonly...
