Sample Preparation Methods

Sample preparation methods are procedures used to transform biological specimens into stable, suitable forms for observation, measurement, or molecular analysis. They typically involve collecting and preserving material, disrupting cells or tissues, and separating or concentrating components through processes such as homogenization, centrifugation, filtration, and extraction. Careful preparation can remove contaminants, protect biomolecules from degradation, and improve the accuracy and reproducibility of downstream techniques, including microscopy, spectroscopy, chromatography, and nucleic acid or protein analysis. In biology, selecting an appropriate method depends on the sample type, target component, and analytical goal, making preparation a critical step in research, diagnostics, and biotechnology.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia Sample preparation is the way in which a sample is treated to prepare for analysis. Careful sample preparation is critical in analytical chemistry to accurately generate either a standard or unknown sample for a chemical measurement. Errors in analytical chemistry methods are categorized as random or systematic. Random errors are errors due to change and are often due to noise in instrument. Systematic errors are due to...

Sample Preparation using a Lipid Monolayer Method for Electron Crystallographic Studies

Lipid monolayers have been used as a foundation for forming two-dimensional (2D) protein crystals for structural studies for decades. They are stable at the air-water interface and can serve as a thin supporting material for electron imaging. Here we present the proven steps on preparing lipid monolayers for biological studies.
