Spiral Microchannels

Spiral microchannels are curved microfluidic conduits designed to guide and manipulate fluids, cells, and particles at the microscale, making them useful for compact, label-free sample processing. As fluid moves through the spiral, inertial lift forces interact with secondary Dean vortices generated by channel curvature, causing particles with different sizes or physical properties to migrate toward distinct equilibrium positions. In immunology and infection research, this behavior can support the separation, concentration, or enrichment of blood cells, immune-cell populations, and other sample components before analysis. These devices can reduce handling steps and sample volumes, enabling faster preparation for cell characterization, pathogen-related studies, and diagnostic workflows.

Label-Free Neutrophil Separation from Tracheal Secretion Using Spiral Microfluidics Channel

2025

This video demonstrates separating neutrophils from tracheal secretions using a microfluidic device with spiral channels. The device achieves efficient separation based on cell size by utilizing varying thicknesses and trapezoidal-shaped channels. The interplay between forces results in large neutrophils accumulating near the inner wall while erythrocytes and mucin aggregates remain near the outer wall, ensuring effective neutrophil separation.

Culturing Murine Spiral Ganglion Neuron Explants on Multielectrode Arrays

2025

This video demonstrates the process for isolating spiral ganglion explants from the inner ear and co-culturing them with the organ of Corti on a multielectrode array. Spiral ganglia are carefully extracted and sectioned into smaller tissue sections or explants. These explants are cultured on the multielectrode array's active area to promote neuronal process outgrowth.

A microchannels-on-a-chip platform was developed by the combination of photolithographic reflowable photoresist technique, soft lithography, and microfluidics. The endothelialized microchannels platform mimics the three-dimensional (3D) geometry of in vivo microvessels, runs under controlled continuous perfusion flow, allows for high-quality and real-time imaging and can be applied for microvascular research.
