Pediatric Obesity

Pediatric obesity is a chronic medical condition characterized by excess body fat in children and adolescents, often assessed using age- and sex-specific body mass index percentiles. It develops through sustained energy imbalance shaped by genetic susceptibility, dietary patterns, physical activity, sleep, and broader social and environmental factors; enlarged adipose tissue can also promote metabolic and inflammatory changes. In medicine, evaluation helps identify related conditions such as insulin resistance, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Prevention and treatment typically combine family-based nutrition changes, increased physical activity, behavioral support, and ongoing monitoring, making pediatric obesity an important focus for clinical care and public health.

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's weight and height, used to categorize individuals into weight ranges. It is calculated using the formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Obesity is a health condition characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that poses health risks, often diagnosed with a BMI ≥ 30. This excess fat storage occurs when surplus dietary calories are converted into triglycerides and stored in adipocytes...

This video showcases a technique for co-culturing glutamatergic neurons and pediatric high-grade glioma (pHGG) cells within a microfluidic device. Human induced pluripotent stem cells are introduced into the microfluidic system and incubated to promote their differentiation into mature cortical glutamatergic neurons. Following this, the pHGG cells are introduced onto the mature neurons, establishing a co-culture and enabling interactions between neurons and pHGG cells.

Despite an increase in the use of structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in humans, the study of young pediatric populations remains a challenge. We present a hands-on, step-by-step video protocol including guidelines for clinicians and researchers intending to perform (f)MRI in young children.
