Hier gebruiken we een polymeerstabilisator om metaal-organische raamwerk (MOF) suspensies te bereiden die een duidelijk verminderde verstrooiing vertonen in hun grondtoestand en voorbijgaande absorptiespectra. Met deze MOF-suspensies biedt het protocol verschillende richtlijnen om de MOFs spectroscopisch te karakteriseren om interpreteerbare gegevens op te leveren.
Metaal-organische raamwerken (MOF’s) bieden een uniek platform om lichtgestuurde processen in solid-state materialen te begrijpen, gezien hun hoge structurele tunability. De progressie van op MOF gebaseerde fotochemie is echter belemmerd door de moeilijkheid om deze materialen spectraal te karakteriseren. Aangezien MOFs meestal groter zijn dan 100 nm, zijn ze gevoelig voor overmatige lichtverstrooiing, waardoor gegevens van waardevolle analytische hulpmiddelen zoals transiënte absorptie en emissiespectroscopie bijna niet te interpreteren zijn. Om zinvolle inzichten te krijgen in op MOF gebaseerde fotochemische en fysische processen, moet speciale aandacht worden besteed aan het goed voorbereiden van MOFs op spectroscopische metingen, evenals de experimentele opstellingen die gegevens van hogere kwaliteit verzamelen. Met deze overwegingen in het achterhoofd biedt deze gids een algemene benadering en een reeks richtlijnen voor het spectroscopisch onderzoek van MOFs. De gids behandelt de volgende belangrijke onderwerpen: (1) monstervoorbereidingsmethoden, (2) spectroscopische technieken/metingen met MOFs, (3) experimentele opstellingen, (3) controle-experimenten en (4) post-run stabiliteitskarakterisering. Met de juiste monstervoorbereiding en experimentele benaderingen zijn baanbrekende vorderingen in de richting van het fundamentele begrip van licht-MOF-interacties aanzienlijk haalbaarder.
Metaal-organische raamwerken (MOF’s) zijn samengesteld uit metaaloxideknopen verbonden door organische moleculen, die hiërarchische poreuze structuren vormen wanneer hun samenstellende delen samen reageren onder solvotherme omstandigheden1. Permanent poreuze MOFs werden voor het eerst gemeld in de vroege jaren 2000, en sindsdien is het ontluikende veld uitgebreid tot een breed scala aan toepassingen, gezien de unieke tunability van hun structurele componenten 2,3,4,5,6,7. Tijdens de groei van het veld van MOFs zijn er een handvol onderzoekers geweest die fotoactieve materialen hebben opgenomen in de knooppunten, liganden en poriën van MOFs om hun potentieel te benutten in lichtgestuurde processen, zoals fotokatalyse 8,9,10,11, upconversie 12,13,14,15,16 en foto-elektrochemie 17,18. Een handvol van de lichtgestuurde processen van MOFs draait om energie- en elektronenoverdracht tussen donoren en acceptoren 17,19,20,21,22,23,24,25. De twee meest gebruikte technieken om energie- en elektronenoverdracht in moleculaire systemen te bestuderen zijn emissie- en transiënte absorptiespectroscopie26,27.
Veel onderzoek naar MOFs heeft zich gericht op emissiekarakterisering, gezien het relatieve gemak bij het voorbereiden van monsters, het uitvoeren van metingen en (relatief) eenvoudige analyse 19,22,23,24,28. Energieoverdracht manifesteert zich doorgaans als een verlies in de emissie-intensiteit en levensduur van de donor en een toename van de emissie-intensiteit van de acceptor die in de MOF-backbonewordt geladen 19,23,28. Bewijs van ladingsoverdracht in een MOF manifesteert zich als een afname van de emissie kwantumopbrengst en levensduur van de chromofoor in de MOF29,30. Hoewel emissiespectroscopie een krachtig hulpmiddel is bij de analyse van MOFs, behandelt het slechts een deel van de benodigde informatie om een volledig mechanistisch begrip van MOF-fotochemie te presenteren. Transiënte absorptiespectroscopie kan niet alleen ondersteuning bieden voor het bestaan van energie- en ladingsoverdracht, maar de methode kan ook spectrale handtekeningen detecteren die verband houden met het niet-emissive singlet- en triplet-aangeslagen toestandsgedrag, waardoor het een van de meest veelzijdige hulpmiddelen is voor karakterisering31,32,33.
De belangrijkste reden waarom robuustere karakteriseringstechnieken zoals transiënte absorptiespectroscopie zelden worden toegepast op MOFs is te wijten aan de moeilijkheid om monsters met minimale verstrooiing voor te bereiden, vooral met suspensies34. In de weinige studies die met succes voorbijgaande absorptie op MOFs uitvoeren, zijn de MOFs < 500 nm groot, met enkele uitzonderingen, wat het belang benadrukt van het verminderen van de deeltjesgrootte om verstrooiing 15,21,25,35,36,37 te minimaliseren. Andere studies maken gebruik van MOF dunne films17 of SURMOFs38,39,40 om het scatterprobleem te omzeilen; Vanuit het oogpunt van toepasbaarheid is het gebruik ervan echter vrij beperkt. Bovendien hebben sommige onderzoeksgroepen polymeerfilms gemaakt van MOFs met Nafion of polystyreen34, waarbij de eerste enige bezorgdheid oproept over de stabiliteit gezien de zeer zure sulfonaatgroepen op Nafion. Geïnspireerd door de bereiding van colloïdale halfgeleidersuspensies 41,42, hebben we veel succes geboekt met het gebruik van polymeren om MOF-deeltjes te helpen suspensissen en stabiliseren voor spectroscopische metingen11. In dit werk stellen we breed toepasbare richtlijnen vast die moeten worden gevolgd als het gaat om het voorbereiden van MOF-suspensies en het karakteriseren ervan met emissie-, nanoseconde (ns) en ultrasnelle (uf) transiënte absorptie (TA) spectroscopietechnieken.
Hoewel de bovenstaande resultaten en het protocol algemene richtlijnen afbakenen voor het minimaliseren van verstrooiing van MOFs in spectroscopische karakterisering, is er een grote variabiliteit in MOF-deeltjesgrootte en -structuur die van invloed is op spectroscopische resultaten en daarom de interpretatiemethoden vervaagt. Om de interpretatie te verduidelijken en de belasting te verlichten die gepaard gaat met het analyseren van MOF-spectroscopische gegevens, is het vinden van een procedure om de MOFs zo klein mogeli…
