Q1: What is Raman scattering and how does it differ from Rayleigh scattering?
Rayleigh scattering occurs when a photon excites a molecule to a virtual state and returns it to the ground state, emitting a photon with the same wavelength as the incident light. Raman scattering involves inelastic interactions where the molecule transitions to a different vibrational energy level, causing the scattered photon to have a different wavelength. This energy shift reveals molecular vibrational information.
Q2: What are Stokes and anti-Stokes scattering in Raman spectroscopy?
Stokes scattering occurs when a molecule gains energy from a photon and transitions to a higher vibrational state, producing a lower-energy scattered photon. Anti-Stokes scattering happens when a molecule in an excited vibrational state loses energy to the photon, emitting higher-energy scattered light. At room temperature, Stokes scattering dominates because most molecules occupy ground states.
Q3: Why are Raman and infrared spectroscopy considered complementary techniques?
