Epithelial Cell Markers

Epithelial cell markers are proteins, glycoconjugates, and other molecular features used to identify epithelial cells and distinguish them from neighboring tissues. Many markers reflect epithelial structure or function, including cell-junction components, cytoskeletal proteins, and lineage-associated surface molecules that can be detected through antibody binding, gene-expression analysis, or tissue staining. In biology and biomedical research, marker panels help characterize normal epithelia, classify tumors, trace cell differentiation, and verify the identity of cultured cells or organoid populations. Because marker expression can vary with tissue type, developmental stage, and disease, interpreting several markers together provides more reliable evidence than relying on a single signal.

2016

An example of adenoviral gene therapy in the human diabetic organ-cultured corneas is presented towards the normalization of delayed wound healing and markedly reduced epithelial stem cell marker expression in these corneas. It also describes the optimization of this process in stem cell-enriched limbal epithelial cultures.

We present here a cell culture method for inducing mesenchymal-epithelial transitions (MET) in sarcoma cells based on combined ectopic expression of microRNA-200 family members and grainyhead-like 2 (GRHL2). This method is suitable for better understanding the biological impact of phenotypic plasticity on cancer aggressiveness and treatments.

The fallopian tube (FT) is emerging as an alternative site of origin for serous ovarian carcinoma (SOC). This protocol describes a novel method for the isolation and ex vivo culture of fallopian tube epithelial cells. This system recapitulates the in vivo epithelium and allows the study of SOC pathogenesis.

We present a protocol that combines cell isolation and whole-cell patch-clamp recording to measure the electrical properties of the primary dissociated epithelial cells from the rat cauda epididymides. This protocol allows for investigation of the functional properties of primary epididymal epithelial cells to further elucidate the physiological role of the epididymis.
