Maldi-tof Mass Spectrometry

MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry is an analytical technique that measures the mass-to-charge ratios of ionized molecules, enabling rapid characterization of proteins, peptides, lipids, and other biomolecules. In this method, a sample is mixed with a light-absorbing matrix, exposed to a laser, and converted into gas-phase ions; the ions then travel through a flight tube, with smaller or more highly charged species reaching the detector sooner. In biology, MALDI-TOF supports biomolecular profiling, protein analysis, and microbial identification by comparing characteristic mass patterns. Its speed, sensitivity, and ability to analyze complex biological samples make it valuable in research, clinical microbiology, and biotechnology.

MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry

Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) is a mass spectrometry ion source ideal for the analysis of biomolecules. Instead of ionizing compounds in the gaseous state, samples are embedded in a matrix, which is struck by a laser. The matrix absorbs the majority of the energy; some of this energy is then transferred to the sample, which ionizes as a result. Sample ions can then be identified using a time-of-flight analyzer (TOF). This video covers principles of MALDI-TOF, including...

Mass spectrometry is a powerful characterization technique that can identify and separate a wide variety of compounds ranging from chemical to biological entities, based on their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z). The instruments that allow this detection, known as mass spectrometers, have three components: an ion source, a mass analyzer, and a detector. These spectrometers differ based on the nature of their ion source and analyzers.Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) is a commonly...
