Description
Breathing is controlled by nerve centers in the brainstem. These respiratory centers send nerve signals to the muscles that move the lungs. The main centers are in the medulla oblongata and the pons.

脑干中称为呼吸中枢的神经元群介导呼吸的调节。
两个主要中枢是位于延髓的延髓呼吸中枢和位于脑桥的脑桥呼吸中枢。
延髓呼吸中枢包含两个部分：背侧呼吸群（DRG）和腹侧呼吸群（VRG）。
在正常呼吸过程中，延髓背侧呼吸组（DRG）通过膈神经和肋间神经向膈肌和肋外肌发送冲动，引起这些肌肉收缩，从而引发吸气。
大约两秒后，DRG 变为不活跃状态，使这些肌肉放松，从而引起呼气。
腹侧呼吸组（VRG）通过其前包钦格复合体，通过调节背侧呼吸组（DRG）神经元产生动作电位的频率，来生成呼吸节律。
其余的VRG神经元通过控制辅助呼吸肌来调节用力呼吸。
