Respiratory System

Respiratory Volumes and Capacities

Respiratory volumes define the varying amounts of air that enter and exit the lungs, while respiratory capacities are combinations of respiratory volumes.
These can be measured using a spirometer and, shown here, is a spirographic record of a healthy adult.
The volume of air exchanged during normal breathing is called tidal volume or TV.
After normal breathing, the air that can be forcefully inhaled forms the inspiratory reserve volume or IRV.
In contrast, the air forcefully exhaled post-normal breathing is the Expiratory Reserve Volume or ERV, with the remaining air termed as Residual Volume or RV.
Inspiratory capacity, calculated by summing IRV&#160; and TV, represents the maximum air intake possible after a normal exhale.
The functional residual capacity, the summing of ERV and RV, is the air remaining in the lungs after normal breathing.
Vital capacity, the sum of IRV, TV, and ERV is the total amount of exchangeable air in the lungs.
Total Lung Capacity, the sum of IRV, TV, ERV, and RV is the maximum volume of air the lungs can hold.

The respiratory system is responsible for the intake of oxygen and the expulsion of carbon dioxide from the body. Respiratory volumes describe the volume of air in the lungs at different phases of the respiratory cycle. Tidal volume is the air breathed in and out during normal, quiet breathing. Inspiratory reserve volume is the air that can be forcefully inspired beyond the tidal volume. In contrast, expiratory reserve volume refers to the air that can be expelled from the lungs after a normal expiration. Residual volume, which keeps the alveoli open and prevents lung collapse, is the air in the lungs after a forceful exhale.
Respiratory Capacities
Respiratory capacities, such as inspiratory, functional residual, vital, and total lung capacities, are measured to diagnose respiratory disorders. The inspiratory capacity (IC) is the maximum amount of air that can be inhaled after a normal exhalation, calculated by adding the tidal volume (TV) and inspiratory reserve volume (IRV). The functional residual capacity (FRC) represents the air in the lungs after a quiet expiration. It is the combined residual volume (RV) and expiratory reserve volume (ERV). Vital capacity (VC) is the maximum amount of air that a person can exhale after taking the deepest breath possible and is the sum of TV, IRV, and ERV. Finally, the total lung capacity (TLC) is the sum of all lung volumes and provides crucial information about a person&#39;s respiratory status. In obstructive pulmonary diseases, TLC, FRC, and RV may increase because the lungs hyperinflate, whereas in restrictive diseases, VC, TLC, FRC, and RV decline because lung expansion is limited.
Minute Ventilation
Minute ventilation, or the total volume of air inspired and expired each minute, is calculated by multiplying tidal volume by the respiratory rate. In a healthy adult at rest, minute ventilation is typically around 6000-8000 mL/min. Lower-than-normal minute ventilation may indicate a problem with the lungs or respiratory system. Note that not all inhaled air reaches the respiratory zone of the respiratory system, as some of it remains in the conducting airways, known as the anatomic dead space.
Alveolar Ventilation
Alveolar ventilation is the volume of air per minute that reaches the respiratory zone and participates in external respiration. This measure is typically around 4200 mL/min in a healthy adult at rest. It is calculated by multiplying the respiratory rate by the difference between the tidal volume and the volume of air remaining in the anatomic dead space. Alveolar ventilation provides a more accurate assessment of gas exchange in the lungs than minute ventilation alone. Together, minute and alveolar ventilation are essential measures of pulmonary function that can help diagnose respiratory disorders and track treatment progress.

Lung volume measurements show how air moves in and out of the respiratory system during breathing. They help explain how the body takes in oxygen and removes carbon dioxide. Respiratory volumes and capacities also give useful information about lung function.

Tidal volume is the air breathed in and out during normal, quiet breathing. Inspiratory reserve volume is the extra air that can be forcefully inhaled beyond tidal volume. Expiratory reserve volume is the extra air that can be forcefully exhaled after a normal breath out. Residual volume is the air left in the lungs after a forceful exhale, and it helps keep the alveoli open so the lungs do not collapse.

Respiratory capacities combine these volumes into larger measurements. Inspiratory capacity is the maximum air that can be inhaled after a normal exhalation. It equals tidal volume plus inspiratory reserve volume. Functional residual capacity is the air left in the lungs after a quiet expiration. It equals residual volume plus expiratory reserve volume.

Vital capacity is the greatest amount of air a person can exhale after taking the deepest breath possible. It is the sum of tidal volume, inspiratory reserve volume, and expiratory reserve volume. Total lung capacity is the sum of all lung volumes and gives important information about respiratory status. In obstructive pulmonary disease, total lung capacity, functional residual capacity, and residual volume may increase because the lungs hyperinflate. In restrictive disease, vital capacity, total lung capacity, functional residual capacity, and residual volume decline because lung expansion is limited.

Minute ventilation is the total volume of air inspired and expired each minute. It is calculated by multiplying tidal volume by respiratory rate. It is calculated by multiplying respiratory rate by the difference between tidal volume and the air left in anatomic dead space. In a healthy adult at rest, alveolar ventilation is usually about 4200 mL/min. It gives a better measure of gas exchange in the lungs than minute ventilation alone. Together, minute ventilation and alveolar ventilation are key measures of pulmonary function and can help diagnose respiratory disorders and monitor treatment progress.

Content elaboration: The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract (alimentary canal) as well as various accessory organs including the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The digestive system processes and supplies the molecules needed to sustain the living tissues within the body through the absorption of nutrients. Six major functions of the digestive system include secretion, ingestion, mechanical processing, enzymatic digestion, absorption and excretion. The lining of the digestive system protects surrounding tissues from the mechanical and enzymatic stresses of the digestive process. Processes of the digestive system include the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules which are then absorbed by the digestive tract. Specific actions within the digestive system include mastication, peristalsis, segmentation and the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for digestion. The metabolic functions of the accessory organs play strategic roles in the breakdown of food products, the maintenance of glucose levels within the blood and the regulation of homeostasis in the body. Indigestible material is excreted as waste. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, conditions such as gallstones, heartburn, ulcers, dehydration, diarrhea, cirrhosis and cancers of the digestive system. Investigations are used to understand and explain the digestive system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.

Gas exchange refers to the diffusion of gas across the alveolar epithelium in the respiratory system and capillary endothelium of the cardiovascular system.
