Physical Principles Governing Gas Exchange

Inhaled air contains a mixture of different gases like nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide, among others.
Dalton&#39;s law is fundamental to understanding gas behavior in this mix. According to this law, in a mixture of gases, each gas exerts its own pressure independently, known as partial pressure.
Partial pressure is calculated by multiplying the percent concentration of the gas in the mixture by the total pressure exerted by the mixture.
Gas diffusion relies on a partial pressure gradient, moving from high-pressure regions to low-pressure regions such as between the air, lungs, blood vessels, and cells.
In contrast, Henry&#39;s Law is useful in understanding the solubility of gases in body fluids.
It states that the quantity of a gas that dissolves in a liquid is proportional to its partial pressure and solubility.
For instance, blood can retain more CO2 due to its higher solubility than O2.
In contrast, inhaling nitrogen has minimal bodily impact because of its low solubility in the blood.

Gas behavior plays a vital role in understanding bodily processes such as external and internal respiration. External respiration involves the diffusion of oxygen into the blood and carbon dioxide out of it in the lungs. In contrast, internal respiration happens in body tissues, where these gases move in opposite directions.
Gas Laws Governing Respiration
The behavior of gases is guided by Dalton&#39;s Law of partial pressures and Henry&#39;s Law.
Dalton&#39;s Law asserts that the total pressure exerted by a mixture of gases equals the sum of the pressures each gas would exert independently. The partial pressure of each gas is directly proportional to its percentage in the mixture.
Henry&#39;s Law states that if a gas will dissolve in a liquid, is directly proportional to the partial pressure of the gas in contact with the liquid. This means that the quantity and rate at which a gas dissolves in a liquid depends on the gas&#39;s concentration. This principle also applies to the exchange of gases in the lungs and tissues. Notably, the solubility of a gas in a liquid and the temperature of the liquid also impact how much gas will dissolve at any given partial pressure.
Practical Applications of Gas Laws
These gas laws have significant practical applications. Hyperbaric oxygen chambers, which contain oxygen at pressures higher than 1 atm, force more oxygen into the blood of patients with carbon monoxide poisoning, illustrating Henry&#39;s Law.

Gas laws explain how oxygen and carbon dioxide move during respiration. External respiration is the exchange of gases in the lungs. Oxygen diffuses into the blood, and carbon dioxide diffuses out. Internal respiration happens in body tissues, where the gases move in the opposite directions.

Two gas laws guide this process: Dalton's law of partial pressures and Henry's law. Dalton's law says the total pressure of a gas mixture equals the sum of the pressures of each gas acting alone. The partial pressure of each gas depends on how much of that gas is present in the mixture.

Henry's law explains how gases dissolve in liquids. If a gas can dissolve in a liquid, the amount dissolved is directly related to the gas's partial pressure above the liquid. In respiration, this helps explain gas exchange in the lungs and tissues. The solubility of the gas and the temperature of the liquid also affect how much gas will dissolve at a given partial pressure.

These principles have real uses in medicine. Hyperbaric oxygen chambers use oxygen at pressures higher than 1 atm. This forces more oxygen into the blood of patients with carbon monoxide poisoning and shows Henry's law in action.

The digestive system processes and supplies the molecules needed to sustain the living tissues within the body through the absorption of nutrients. Six major functions of the digestive system include secretion, ingestion, mechanical processing, enzymatic digestion, absorption and excretion. The lining of the digestive system protects surrounding tissues from the mechanical and enzymatic stresses of the digestive process. Processes of the digestive system include the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules which are then absorbed by the digestive tract. Specific actions within the digestive system include mastication, peristalsis, segmentation and the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for digestion. The metabolic functions of the accessory organs play strategic roles in the breakdown of food products, the maintenance of glucose levels within the blood and the regulation of homeostasis in the body. Indigestible material is excreted as waste. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, conditions such as gallstones, heartburn, ulcers, dehydration, diarrhea, cirrhosis and cancers of the digestive system. Investigations are used to understand and explain the digestive system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.

The airways include the nasal and oral cavities, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli. The respiratory system transports and exchanges gases including oxygen and carbon dioxide. Processes involved in the respiratory system include respiration mechanics and gas exchange. Respiration mechanics is the process by which humans breathe and includes the movement of the diaphragm and pressure-volume relationships. Gas exchange refers to the diffusion of gas across the alveolar epithelium in the respiratory system and capillary endothelium of the cardiovascular system. Lung volumes and capacities can be measured using spirometry. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis and the effects of smoking and pollution. Investigations are used to understand and explain the respiratory system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
