Respiratory System

Larynx

The larynx or voice box connects the laryngopharynx with the trachea.
It includes unpaired thyroid cartilage, cricoid cartilage, and the epiglottis, as well as paired arytenoid, cuneiform, and corniculate cartilages.
The thyroid cartilage forms the anterior and lateral walls of the larynx. It is more prominent in males and visible from the outside, commonly known as the Adam&#39;s apple.
A ligament called the thyrohyoid&#160; membrane connects the hyoid bone to the thyroid cartilage.
Posteriorly, the epiglottis appears as a large leaf-shaped structure.
The cricoid cartilage forms the inferior wall of the larynx and is connected to the trachea.
In the sagittal view, the pairs of arytenoid, corniculate, and cuneiform cartilages form the lateral and posterior walls of the larynx. They support the vocal folds and lateral aspects of the epiglottis.
The glottis consists of paired mucous membrane folds &#8212; vestibular folds, vocal folds, and space between them known as the rima glottidis.
With the help of intrinsic and extrinsic muscles in the larynx, cartilages and membrane folds of the glottis move systemically, producing voice.

The human larynx, often referred to as the voice box, is an intricate organ located in the neck. It serves as a pathway for air to enter the lungs during respiration and is an essential component of voice production.
Anatomy of the Larynx
The larynx consists of various components, including cartilage, muscles, and vocal cords. Its structure includes three large unpaired cartilages&#8212;the thyroid, cricoid, and epiglottis&#8212;and three smaller paired cartilages&#8212;the arytenoids, corniculates, and cuneiforms. These cartilages are bound together by ligaments and membranes.
The vocal cords (also known as vocal folds) are two bands of muscle and connective tissue found within the larynx. They vibrate to produce sound and are controlled by branches of the vagus nerve called the recurrent laryngeal nerves and superior laryngeal nerves. The larynx also contains glands that produce mucus, which moistens and protects its lining. Adjacent to the larynx are several important structures, including the hyoid bone, which supports the larynx, and the trachea, into which the larynx opens. Several muscles, such as the sternothyroid and thyrohyoid muscles, help move and stabilize the larynx. Blood supply to the larynx is primarily provided by the superior and inferior laryngeal arteries, and nerve supply comes from the superior and recurrent laryngeal nerves, both branches of the vagus nerve.
Role in Respiration
During respiration, air flows through the larynx into the trachea and then to the lungs. The vocal cords open wide by abducting during inhalation to maximize airflow. During exhalation, they can either remain open for normal breathing or close to allow pressure build-up for actions like coughing or lifting heavy objects.
Respiratory measurements such as tidal volume (the amount of air inhaled or exhaled during normal breathing), inspiratory reserve volume (the maximum amount of air one can inhale after a normal inhalation), and expiratory reserve volume (the maximum amount of air one can exhale after a normal exhalation) are primarily measures of lung function but can be affected by the patency (openness) of the larynx.
Sound and Voice Production
The larynx plays a crucial role in voice production. During phonation, air from the lungs passes through the larynx, causing the vocal cords to vibrate. This vibration creates sound waves, which are then modified by the resonant properties of the vocal tract, including the tongue, palate, and lips, to produce distinct speech sounds. The pitch and tone of the voice can be altered by changing the tension and length of the vocal cords, which are controlled by the cricothyroid and thyroarytenoid muscles. The volume of the voice is determined by the force of the airflow from the lungs and the tension on the vocal cords.
Clinical Importance
Common clinical conditions associated with the larynx include laryngitis (inflammation of the larynx), vocal cord paralysis, and laryngeal cancer. Symptoms can include hoarseness, difficulty swallowing or breathing, and a persistent cough. Treatment options vary depending on the condition and can range from voice therapy and medication to surgery.

The larynx is the voice box in the neck. It carries air into the lungs and helps produce voice. Its structure is complex because it must support both breathing and sound production.

The larynx contains cartilage, muscles, and the vocal cords, also called vocal folds. It includes three large unpaired cartilages: the thyroid, cricoid, and epiglottis. It also includes three paired cartilages: the arytenoids, corniculates, and cuneiforms. Ligaments and membranes hold these parts together.

The vocal cords are two bands of muscle and connective tissue inside the larynx. They vibrate to create sound. The recurrent laryngeal nerves and superior laryngeal nerves, which are branches of the vagus nerve, control them. The larynx also has glands that make mucus, which keeps the lining moist and protected.

Several nearby structures help support and move the larynx. The hyoid bone supports it. The trachea opens below it. Muscles such as the sternothyroid and thyrohyoid help stabilize and move it. Blood comes mainly from the superior and inferior laryngeal arteries, and nerve supply comes from the superior and recurrent laryngeal nerves.

During breathing, air passes through the larynx into the trachea and then the lungs. The vocal cords open wide during inhalation to allow more airflow. During exhalation, they may stay open for normal breathing or close to help build pressure for coughing or lifting heavy objects. Larynx openness can affect lung measurements such as tidal volume, inspiratory reserve volume, and expiratory reserve volume.

The larynx is also essential for voice production. During phonation, air from the lungs passes through it and makes the vocal cords vibrate. That vibration creates sound waves, which are shaped by the tongue, palate, and lips into speech. Pitch changes when the cricothyroid and thyroarytenoid muscles change vocal cord tension and length. Voice volume depends on airflow force and vocal cord tension.

Problems with the larynx can affect speech and breathing. Common conditions include laryngitis, vocal cord paralysis, and laryngeal cancer. Symptoms can include hoarseness, trouble swallowing or breathing, and a persistent cough. Treatment may include voice therapy, medication, or surgery, depending on the condition.

Content elaboration: The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract (alimentary canal) as well as various accessory organs including the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The digestive system processes and supplies the molecules needed to sustain the living tissues within the body through the absorption of nutrients. Six major functions of the digestive system include secretion, ingestion, mechanical processing, enzymatic digestion, absorption and excretion. The lining of the digestive system protects surrounding tissues from the mechanical and enzymatic stresses of the digestive process. Processes of the digestive system include the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules which are then absorbed by the digestive tract. Specific actions within the digestive system include mastication, peristalsis, segmentation and the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for digestion. The metabolic functions of the accessory organs play strategic roles in the breakdown of food products, the maintenance of glucose levels within the blood and the regulation of homeostasis in the body. Indigestible material is excreted as waste. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, conditions such as gallstones, heartburn, ulcers, dehydration, diarrhea, cirrhosis and cancers of the digestive system. Investigations are used to understand and explain the digestive system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.

The airways include the nasal and oral cavities, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli. The respiratory system transports and exchanges gases including oxygen and carbon dioxide. Processes involved in the respiratory system include respiration mechanics and gas exchange. Respiration mechanics is the process by which humans breathe and includes the movement of the diaphragm and pressure-volume relationships. Gas exchange refers to the diffusion of gas across the alveolar epithelium in the respiratory system and capillary endothelium of the cardiovascular system. Lung volumes and capacities can be measured using spirometry. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis and the effects of smoking and pollution.
