Gross Anatomy of the Lungs

Enclosed within the ribcage, the lungs are cone-shaped organs in the thoracic cavity. Their apex lies beneath the clavicle, and the base sits on the diaphragm.
They are enveloped by the pleurae and connected to the mediastinum via vascular and bronchial links, known as the lung root.
Each lung features a hilum on the mediastinal surface, acting as an entry and exit point for various vessels, bronchi, and nerves.
The right lung is larger than the left lung, which has a cardiac notch to house the heart.
When seen laterally, the left lung is divided into superior and inferior lobes by the oblique fissure, while the right lung is split into superior, middle, and inferior lobes by the oblique and horizontal fissures.
Each lobe contains several bronchopulmonary segments, separated by connective tissue septa. The right lung has ten segments, while the left lung has 8 to 10.
These bronchopulmonary segments are further divided into smaller compartments called lobules, visible as hexagonal structures at the surface of the lung.

The lungs are a pair of vital organs connected to the trachea via the left and right bronchi. The base of these organs meets the dome-shaped muscle known as the diaphragm. Encased by the pleurae, the lungs contact the mediastinum. The right lung is shorter yet wider, and has a larger volume than the left lung. The left lung has an indentation known as the cardiac notch. The superior region of the lungs is referred to as the apex, whereas the base is the lower region near the diaphragm. The costal surface is the part of the lung in contact with the ribs, and the mediastinal surface contacts the mediastinum.
The structure of each lung is further divided into smaller sections termed lobes, separated by fissures. The right lung has three lobes: the superior middle and inferior lobes. The left lung has only a superior and inferior lobe.&#160; Each lobe consists of multiple bronchopulmonary segments, each supplied by a separate tertiary bronchus and artery. As the bronchi branch into bronchioles, they form subdivisions known as pulmonary lobules, each receiving a bronchiole with multiple branches. An interlobular septum, a connective tissue wall, separates one lobule from another.
The lungs&#39; blood supply is pivotal for gas exchange and is a transportation path for gaseous exchange in the lungs. The parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems provide critical airway control through constriction and dilation, respectively. The pulmonary circulation transports deoxygenated blood to the lungs, where erythrocytes absorb oxygen. The pulmonary artery, branching out from the pulmonary trunk, carries this deoxygenated blood to the alveoli. The pulmonary artery branches continuously, mirroring the structure of the bronchi, with each branch reducing in diameter. One arteriole and one venule service each pulmonary lobule. Upon nearing the alveoli, the pulmonary arteries become the pulmonary capillary network. These capillaries, devoid of smooth muscle fibers, form the respiratory membrane when the capillary wall meets the alveolar wall. Once oxygenated, blood drains from the alveoli via numerous pulmonary veins, exiting the lungs through the hilum.
The parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems govern the dilation and constriction of the airways. The parasympathetic system induces bronchoconstriction, while the sympathetic system induces bronchodilation. Reflex actions such as coughing and the lungs&#39; ability to maintain oxygen and carbon dioxide levels are controlled by these autonomic nervous systems. Sensory nerve fibers originate from the vagus nerve and the second to fifth thoracic ganglia. These nerves enter the lungs at the hilum, forming the pulmonary plexus at the root of the lung. From there, the nerves follow the bronchi within the lungs, branching to innervate muscle fibers, glands, and blood vessels.

The lungs are paired organs that connect to the trachea through the left and right bronchi. Their base rests against the diaphragm, the dome-shaped muscle below the lungs. The lungs are covered by the pleurae and sit next to the mediastinum, the central space in the chest.

The right lung is shorter and wider than the left lung, and it has a larger volume. The left lung has a cardiac notch, which is an indentation for the heart. The top of each lung is the apex, and the lower part is the base. The costal surface touches the ribs, while the mediastinal surface faces the mediastinum.

Each lung is divided into lobes by fissures. The right lung has three lobes: superior, middle, and inferior. The left lung has two lobes: superior and inferior. Each lobe contains bronchopulmonary segments, and each segment has its own tertiary bronchus and artery.

As the bronchi branch into bronchioles, they form pulmonary lobules. A pulmonary lobule is a smaller lung unit with a bronchiole that branches several times. Interlobular septa, which are connective tissue walls, separate one lobule from another.

Blood flow is essential for gas exchange in the lungs. The pulmonary circulation carries deoxygenated blood from the pulmonary trunk into the pulmonary artery and then toward the alveoli. The pulmonary artery keeps branching like the bronchi, and each branch becomes smaller.

One arteriole and one venule serve each pulmonary lobule. Near the alveoli, the pulmonary arteries become a capillary network. These capillaries have no smooth muscle fibers. They help form the respiratory membrane, where the capillary wall meets the alveolar wall.

After oxygen enters the blood, it drains from the alveoli through many pulmonary veins. The blood leaves the lungs through the hilum. The autonomic nervous system also helps control the airways. The parasympathetic system causes bronchoconstriction, and the sympathetic system causes bronchodilation.

These nerves also help control coughing and the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Sensory nerve fibers come from the vagus nerve and the second through fifth thoracic ganglia. They enter the lungs at the hilum and form the pulmonary plexus at the root of the lung. From there, the nerves follow the bronchi and branch to reach muscle fibers, glands, and blood vessels.

Content elaboration: The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract (alimentary canal) as well as various accessory organs including the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The digestive system processes and supplies the molecules needed to sustain the living tissues within the body through the absorption of nutrients. Six major functions of the digestive system include secretion, ingestion, mechanical processing, enzymatic digestion, absorption and excretion. The lining of the digestive system protects surrounding tissues from the mechanical and enzymatic stresses of the digestive process. Processes of the digestive system include the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules which are then absorbed by the digestive tract. Specific actions within the digestive system include mastication, peristalsis, segmentation and the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for digestion. The metabolic functions of the accessory organs play strategic roles in the breakdown of food products, the maintenance of glucose levels within the blood and the regulation of homeostasis in the body. Indigestible material is excreted as waste. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, conditions such as gallstones, heartburn, ulcers, dehydration, diarrhea, cirrhosis and cancers of the digestive system. Investigations are used to understand and explain the digestive system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.

The airways include the nasal and oral cavities, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli. The respiratory system transports and exchanges gases including oxygen and carbon dioxide. Processes involved in the respiratory system include respiration mechanics and gas exchange. Respiration mechanics is the process by which humans breathe and includes the movement of the diaphragm and pressure-volume relationships. Gas exchange refers to the diffusion of gas across the alveolar epithelium in the respiratory system and capillary endothelium of the cardiovascular system. Lung volumes and capacities can be measured using spirometry. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis and the effects of smoking and pollution.
