Chemical Factors Affecting Respiration Centers

CO2, O2, and H+ ion levels affect the rate of respiration.
These changes are detected by the central chemoreceptors in the brain stem, and the peripheral chemoreceptors in the aortic arch and the bifurcations of the common carotid arteries.
In hypercapnia, an increased level of arterial PCO2 drives the diffusion of CO2 from the blood to the cells, forming carbonic acid.
This carbonic acid then dissociates, liberating H+ ions, which are detected by the central chemoreceptors in the brain, triggering an intensified breathing pace.
Conversely, peripheral chemoreceptors can detect increased PCO2 directly and also respond to increased H+ ion levels.
Normally, blood oxygen levels influence breathing indirectly by altering chemoreceptor sensitivity to changes in CO2.
The peripheral chemoreceptors respond to oxygen levels only when arterial PO2 falls below 60 mmHg.
At this point, the breathing rate increases, creating a feedback loop: increased breathing decreases PCO2 and increases the blood pH, both of which inhibit respiration.
As a result, the breathing rate is slowly restored to normal.

Chemical factors such as changing CO2, O2, and H+ levels in arterial blood play a critical role in influencing respiration depth and rates. These variations are detected by chemoreceptors&#8212;specialized sensors located in two primary body areas. Central chemoreceptors are found throughout the brain stem, including the ventrolateral medulla, while peripheral chemoreceptors are located in the aortic arch and carotid arteries.
CO2 has a potent influence on respiration and is strictly regulated. Under normal conditions, the arterial pCO2 is maintained at 40 mm Hg with small fluctuations within 38-42 mm Hg. An increase in PCO2 levels, known as hypercapnia, leads to an accumulation of CO2 in the brain. This CO2 is hydrated to form carbonic acid, which dissociates to liberate H+, causing a drop in pH. This rise in H+ stimulates central chemoreceptors, closely linked with respiratory regulatory centers. The result is an increase in the depth and rate of breathing facilitated by both central and peripheral chemoreceptors. This increased ventilation rapidly eliminates CO2 from the blood, raising the blood&#39;s pH. Conversely, when pCO2&#160; is abnormally low, respiration slows and becomes shallow.
Changes in arterial pH can alter the respiratory rate and rhythm, independent of CO2 and O2 levels. If arterial pH falls, the respiratory system attempts to compensate by increasing the respiratory rate and depth to eliminate CO2&#160; from the blood. This process is mediated through the peripheral chemoreceptors, as H+ does not cross the blood-brain barrier.
Peripheral chemoreceptors are sensitive to arterial O2 levels and become the primary driver of respiration when arterial pO2 falls below 60 mm Hg. The peripheral chemoreceptors respond by reflexively increasing ventilation.&#160; Although increased ventilation can lead to hypocapnia and an increase in blood pH, which could inhibit respiration, the drive to correct severe hypoxia typically prevails, maintaining elevated ventilation until O2 levels are restored.

Blood gases and blood pH help control breathing rate and depth. Changes in carbon dioxide, oxygen, and hydrogen ion levels in arterial blood are detected by chemoreceptors, which are special sensors in the body.

Central chemoreceptors are found throughout the brain stem, including the ventrolateral medulla. Peripheral chemoreceptors are located in the aortic arch and carotid arteries. Together, these sensors help the respiratory system respond to chemical changes in the blood.

Carbon dioxide has a strong effect on respiration and is tightly regulated. Under normal conditions, arterial pCO2 stays near 40 mm Hg, with only small changes between 38 and 42 mm Hg. When pCO2 rises, a condition called hypercapnia, carbon dioxide builds up in the brain.

In the brain, CO2 combines with water to form carbonic acid. Carbonic acid then breaks apart and releases H+, which lowers pH. This rise in H+ stimulates central chemoreceptors, which are closely linked to respiratory control centers. Breathing then becomes deeper and faster through the action of both central and peripheral chemoreceptors. This increased ventilation removes CO2 from the blood quickly and raises blood pH. If pCO2 becomes too low, breathing slows and becomes shallow.

Arterial pH can also change breathing rate and rhythm even when CO2 and O2 levels stay the same. If arterial pH falls, the respiratory system responds by increasing breathing depth and rate to remove CO2 from the blood. Peripheral chemoreceptors mediate this response because H+ does not cross the blood-brain barrier.

Peripheral chemoreceptors also sense arterial oxygen levels. They become the main drive for breathing when arterial pO2 falls below 60 mm Hg. In that case, they trigger a reflex increase in ventilation. This stronger breathing can lower CO2 and raise blood pH, which could reduce the drive to breathe, but the need to correct severe hypoxia usually remains dominant until oxygen levels recover.

Processes of the digestive system include the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules which are then absorbed by the digestive tract. Specific actions within the digestive system include mastication, peristalsis, segmentation and the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for digestion. The metabolic functions of the accessory organs play strategic roles in the breakdown of food products, the maintenance of glucose levels within the blood and the regulation of homeostasis in the body. Indigestible material is excreted as waste. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, conditions such as gallstones, heartburn, ulcers, dehydration, diarrhea, cirrhosis and cancers of the digestive system. Investigations are used to understand and explain the digestive system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.

The airways include the nasal and oral cavities, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli. The respiratory system transports and exchanges gases including oxygen and carbon dioxide. Processes involved in the respiratory system include respiration mechanics and gas exchange. Respiration mechanics is the process by which humans breathe and includes the movement of the diaphragm and pressure-volume relationships. Gas exchange refers to the diffusion of gas across the alveolar epithelium in the respiratory system and capillary endothelium of the cardiovascular system. Lung volumes and capacities can be measured using spirometry. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis and the effects of smoking and pollution.
