Oxygen Transport in the Blood

Blood primarily transports oxygen bound to hemoglobin in RBCs, with a small percentage dissolved in the plasma due to its low solubility in the blood.
Hemoglobin, composed of four polypeptide chains containing iron-rich heme groups, can bind to four oxygen molecules.
As seen on the dissociation curve, the binding of oxygen to hemoglobin is greatly influenced by the partial pressure of oxygen or PO2 .
As PO2&#160; increases, more oxygen binds to hemoglobin.
For this reason, the hemoglobin in oxygen-rich arterial blood is 98% saturated with oxygen.
Upon reaching the systemic capillaries, oxygen saturation decreases due to a low PO2.
Several physiological factors influence the affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen.
As seen in this graph, a rise in cellular temperature decreases this affinity.
Additionally, the Bohr effect occurs when higher PCO2 and elevated H ions &#160;lower the blood pH, favoring oxygen unloading from hemoglobin.
Furthermore, RBCs produce 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate during glucose metabolism, which also increases the unloading of oxygen from hemoglobin.

Hemoglobin (Hb) is a crucial molecule in the human body, consisting of four polypeptide chains, each bound to an iron-containing heme group. This unique structure enables hemoglobin to bind to oxygen, with each molecule capable of combining with four molecules of oxygen, leading to rapid and reversible oxygen loading. When fully loaded with oxygen, it is called oxyhemoglobin, while hemoglobin that has released oxygen is called reduced hemoglobin or deoxyhemoglobin. As hemoglobin binds oxygen, its shape changes, making it more efficient in picking up additional oxygen molecules. This structural adaptation ensures that the process of both oxygen loading and unloading is highly efficient.
The rate at which hemoglobin binds or releases oxygen is finely regulated by several factors, including partial pressure of oxygen (pO2), temperature, blood pH, partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2), and the concentration of 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate (2,3-BPG) in the blood. These factors work together to guarantee adequate oxygen delivery to tissue cells.
Under normal resting conditions, arterial blood hemoglobin is usually 98% saturated with oxygen, and each 100 ml of systemic arterial blood contains about 20 ml of oxygen, expressed as 20 vol% (volume percent) of oxygen content. As blood flows through systemic capillaries, it releases approximately 5 ml of oxygen per 100 ml of blood, resulting in a Hb saturation of 75% and an oxygen content of 15 vol% in venous blood. This means that venous blood still retains a significant reserve of oxygen that can be utilized when needed.
Aside from pO2, other factors such as temperature, blood pH, pCO2, and BPG levels influence hemoglobin saturation at a given PO2. Red blood cells (RBCs) produce 2,3-BPG during glucose metabolism, and their levels increase when oxygen levels are chronically low. These factors can modify hemoglobin&#39;s three-dimensional structure, ultimately altering its affinity for oxygen. Increased temperature, pCO2, H+ ions, or 2,3-BPG levels in the blood lowers hemoglobin&#39;s affinity for oxygen, facilitating oxygen release. Conversely, decreasing these factors increases hemoglobin&#39;s affinity for oxygen.
It&#39;s noteworthy that these factors are typically highest in the systemic capillaries, where oxygen unloading is essential. As cells metabolize glucose and consume oxygen, they produce carbon dioxide, raising pCO2 and H+ levels in capillary blood. This weakens the Hb-O2 bond, a phenomenon known as the Bohr effect. Additionally, increased temperature in active tissues reduces hemoglobin&#39;s affinity for oxygen, further enhancing oxygen unloading.

Hemoglobin is the main molecule that carries oxygen in blood. It is found in red blood cells and has four polypeptide chains, each attached to an iron-containing heme group. This structure lets one hemoglobin molecule bind up to four oxygen molecules quickly and reversibly.

When hemoglobin is fully loaded with oxygen, it is called oxyhemoglobin. When it has released oxygen, it is called reduced hemoglobin, or deoxyhemoglobin. As hemoglobin binds oxygen, its shape changes, which helps it pick up more oxygen molecules efficiently.

Several factors control how easily hemoglobin binds or releases oxygen. These include the partial pressure of oxygen (pO2), temperature, blood pH, partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2), and the amount of 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate, or 2,3-BPG, in the blood. Together, these factors help make sure tissue cells get enough oxygen.

At rest, arterial blood is usually about 98% saturated with oxygen. In 100 mL of systemic arterial blood, there are about 20 mL of oxygen, which is described as 20 vol% oxygen content. As blood moves through systemic capillaries, it gives up about 5 mL of oxygen per 100 mL of blood. Venous blood then has about 75% hemoglobin saturation and about 15 vol% oxygen content, so it still carries an oxygen reserve.

Even at the same pO2, temperature, pH, pCO2, and BPG levels can change hemoglobin saturation. Red blood cells make 2,3-BPG during glucose metabolism, and its level rises when oxygen has been low for a long time. These changes alter hemoglobin’s three-dimensional shape and shift its affinity for oxygen.

Higher temperature, more pCO2, more H+ ions, or more 2,3-BPG lower hemoglobin’s affinity for oxygen and make release easier. Lower levels of these factors increase oxygen affinity. These conditions are usually strongest in systemic capillaries, where oxygen unloading is needed most.

As body cells use glucose and consume oxygen, they produce carbon dioxide. This raises pCO2 and H+ in capillary blood and weakens the hemoglobin-oxygen bond. This effect is called the Bohr effect. Increased temperature in active tissues also helps hemoglobin release oxygen more readily.

Content elaboration: The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract (alimentary canal) as well as various accessory organs including the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The digestive system processes and supplies the molecules needed to sustain the living tissues within the body through the absorption of nutrients. Six major functions of the digestive system include secretion, ingestion, mechanical processing, enzymatic digestion, absorption and excretion. The lining of the digestive system protects surrounding tissues from the mechanical and enzymatic stresses of the digestive process. Processes of the digestive system include the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules which are then absorbed by the digestive tract. Specific actions within the digestive system include mastication, peristalsis, segmentation and the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for digestion. The metabolic functions of the accessory organs play strategic roles in the breakdown of food products, the maintenance of glucose levels within the blood and the regulation of homeostasis in the body. Indigestible material is excreted as waste. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, conditions such as gallstones, heartburn, ulcers, dehydration, diarrhea, cirrhosis and cancers of the digestive system. Investigations are used to understand and explain the digestive system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.

Processes involved in the respiratory system include respiration mechanics and gas exchange. Respiration mechanics is the process by which humans breathe and includes the movement of the diaphragm and pressure-volume relationships. Gas exchange refers to the diffusion of gas across the alveolar epithelium in the respiratory system and capillary endothelium of the cardiovascular system. Lung volumes and capacities can be measured using spirometry. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis and the effects of smoking and pollution.
