Alveoli and Alveolar Ducts

Within a pulmonary lobule, the terminal bronchioles branch into microscopic respiratory bronchioles, which conduct air to the respiratory zone of the lungs.
These bronchioles further divide into several ducts lined with simple squamous epithelium, known as the alveolar ducts, which end into grape-like structures called the alveolar sacs.
Alveoli are the dilated epithelial structures within these alveolar sacs.
Every alveolus is covered by an extensive capillary network with encircling elastic fibers to stabilize the positions of the alveoli and respiratory bronchioles.
An alveolar wall has numerous squamous pulmonary epithelial cells &#8212; type-I pneumocytes or type-I alveolar cells &#8212; which facilitate gas exchange.
Alveolar walls also have cuboidal epithelial cells called type-II pneumocytes, type-II alveolar cells, or septal cells. These cells secrete alveolar fluid, mainly composed of a surfactant, which prevents alveolar collapse.
There are alveolar macrophages or dust cells in the alveolar walls that aid in removing inhaled pathogens and microscopic dust.
Each lung holds an estimated 150 million alveoli, giving the lungs a spongy texture.

The respiratory zone of the human body, which stands in contrast to the conducting zone, comprises the structures that actively participate in the exchange of gases. The initiation of this zone is marked by the terminal bronchioles converging into respiratory bronchioles, the tiniest bronchiole classification. The respiratory bronchioles give way to the alveolar ducts that opens into a congregation of alveoli. Actively involved in gas exchange, alveoli resemble tiny sacs similar to clusters of grapes, all intricately connected to alveolar ducts.
In addition, an alveolar sac is simply a congregation of several individual alveoli. The diameter of a single alveolus measures around 200 &#956;m, and its elastic nature allows it to expand during inhalation. Neighboring alveoli are interlinked via alveolar pores, which are small openings that ensure uniform air pressure across the alveoli and lungs.
The alveolar wall comprises three dominant cell types: type I, type II, and alveolar macrophages. Type I alveolar cells, also known as type I pneumocytes, are squamous epithelial cells that form up to 97 percent of the alveolar surface, with a thickness of about 25 nm and a high gas permeability. Dispersed among the type I cells are type II alveolar cells (also known as type II pneumocytes or septal cells) that secrete pulmonary surfactant, a phospholipid and protein concoction that decreases the surface tension of water, preventing alveolar collapse. Alveolar macrophages, immune system phagocytic cells, patrol the alveolar wall to remove debris or pathogens that find their way to the alveoli.
Attached to the extraordinarily thin epithelium formed by type I alveolar cells is an equally thin, elastic basement membrane. This membrane forms the border of the endothelial membrane of the capillaries. The combination of the alveolar and capillary membranes results in a respiratory membrane roughly 0.5 &#956;m (micrometers) in thickness. This respiratory membrane is where the actual gas exchange takes place. It facilitates the simple diffusion of gases, allowing oxygen to be absorbed by the blood for transportation and simultaneously releasing CO2 into the alveolar air.

The respiratory zone of the human body is where gas exchange happens. It begins when the terminal bronchioles branch into respiratory bronchioles, the smallest bronchiole type. These then lead into alveolar ducts and finally into clusters of alveoli.

Alveoli are tiny air sacs that look like bunches of grapes. They connect to alveolar ducts, and a group of alveoli forms an alveolar sac. A single alveolus is about 200 μm wide, and its elastic shape lets it expand during inhalation.

Nearby alveoli are linked by alveolar pores. These are small openings that help keep air pressure even across the alveoli and lungs. The alveolar wall also contains three main cell types: type I cells, type II cells, and alveolar macrophages.

Type I alveolar cells, also called type I pneumocytes, are flat epithelial cells. They cover up to 97 percent of the alveolar surface and are only about 25 nm thick, which makes them highly permeable to gases. Type II alveolar cells, also called type II pneumocytes or septal cells, release pulmonary surfactant, a mix of phospholipids and proteins that lowers water surface tension and helps prevent alveolar collapse. Alveolar macrophages act as phagocytic immune cells and remove debris or pathogens that reach the alveoli.

A very thin, elastic basement membrane lies under the type I cells. It meets the endothelial membrane of the capillaries. Together, these layers form the respiratory membrane, which is about 0.5 μm thick. This is the site of simple diffusion, where oxygen moves into the blood for transport and carbon dioxide moves into the alveolar air.

The digestive system processes and supplies the molecules needed to sustain the living tissues within the body through the absorption of nutrients. Six major functions of the digestive system include secretion, ingestion, mechanical processing, enzymatic digestion, absorption and excretion. The lining of the digestive system protects surrounding tissues from the mechanical and enzymatic stresses of the digestive process. Processes of the digestive system include the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules which are then absorbed by the digestive tract. Specific actions within the digestive system include mastication, peristalsis, segmentation and the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for digestion. The metabolic functions of the accessory organs play strategic roles in the breakdown of food products, the maintenance of glucose levels within the blood and the regulation of homeostasis in the body. Indigestible material is excreted as waste. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. The airways include the nasal and oral cavities, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli. The respiratory system transports and exchanges gases including oxygen and carbon dioxide. Processes involved in the respiratory system include respiration mechanics and gas exchange. Respiration mechanics is the process by which humans breathe and includes the movement of the diaphragm and pressure-volume relationships. Gas exchange refers to the diffusion of gas across the alveolar epithelium in the respiratory system and capillary endothelium of the cardiovascular system. Lung volumes and capacities can be measured using spirometry. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis and the effects of smoking and pollution.
