Vectors have both magnitude and direction, while scalars have only magnitude and sign. Force, acceleration, and velocity are vectors. Mass, energy, and time are scalars. Vectors are typically represented by arrows where length indicates magnitude and angle indicates direction within a chosen coordinate system.

Any vector can be decomposed into x- and y-component vectors along perpendicular axes. For a vector at angle θ with magnitude M, the horizontal component equals M times cosine of θ, and the vertical component equals M times sine of θ. These components can be recombined using vector addition to reconstruct the original vector.

Decompose each vector into x- and y-components, then add corresponding components separately. Calculate the resultant x- and y-components, then combine them using the Pythagorean theorem to find magnitude. Use arctangent of the vertical component divided by the horizontal component to find the angle of the resultant vector.

Subtracting one vector from another is equivalent to negating the second vector and adding it to the first. Decompose each vector into x- and y-components, subtract corresponding components, then calculate the vector sum of the resulting components using the Pythagorean theorem and arctangent to find magnitude and direction.

Equilibrium occurs when the net force on an object is zero, resulting in zero acceleration. On a force table, when two equal forces act at 180 degrees from each other, their vector sum is zero and the ring remains stationary. If forces do not cancel, vector addition determines the third force needed to restore equilibrium and establish rotational equilibrium.

A force table is a disk with angle markings and a central ring attached to cords with suspended masses. Masses produce forces measured in Newtons. By adjusting masses and angles for two forces, students calculate the third force needed to prevent ring motion. Comparing calculated results using vector addition with experimental observations validates the vector principles.

Pilots use vector addition and subtraction to maneuver aircraft by adjusting lift against gravity and thrust against drag. When the sum of these four forces equals zero, the plane maintains constant speed and altitude. Navigation also uses vectors: a person walking four blocks east and three blocks north can calculate their displacement vector using vector addition equations.
