Fins increase the surface area available for heat transfer between fluids. Although fins create additional surfaces where boundary layers form, maintaining more laminar flow conditions, finned tubes still transfer significantly more heat than non-finned tubes at identical operating settings. The expanded surface area compensates for reduced fluid mixing, making finned designs more efficient overall.

The Reynolds number measures the ratio of inertial forces to viscous forces, indicating flow pattern characteristics. A higher Reynolds number signals more turbulent flow, greater fluid mixing, and increased heat transfer. It is calculated using pipe diameter, mass velocity, and fluid viscosity, making it essential for predicting heat exchanger performance and optimizing design parameters.

The overall heat transfer coefficient is estimated from experimental data using the Wilson plot method, which plots the reciprocal of overall conductance versus Reynolds number raised to the 0.8 power. Linear regression analysis of this plot solves for heat transfer coefficients by accounting for surface areas, thermal conductivity, pipe thickness, and individual heat transfer coefficients of both fluids.

The boundary layer is the thin fluid layer in contact with surfaces, affected by shearing forces. In laminar boundary layers, minimal mixing inhibits heat transfer. At higher flow rates or longer distances, laminar flow transitions to turbulent flow where bulk fluid mixes more effectively, enhancing heat transfer. Fins complicate this by creating additional boundary layer surfaces.

The logarithmic mean temperature difference (delta TLM) represents the effective temperature driving force between bulk fluid flow and heat transfer surfaces. Combined with the overall heat transfer coefficient and area, it calculates total heat transferred using the equation Q = UA × delta TLM. This accounts for temperature variations across the heat exchanger during steady-state operation.

Heat exchangers regulate temperature in building heating and air conditioning systems. In critical care, they control core patient temperature after cardiac arrest, neurogenic fever, or surgery. They also enable protein denaturation and heat precipitation from plant extracts, as demonstrated in malarial vaccine extraction from transgenic tobacco, reducing host cell protein concentration.

Heat exchangers can operate with fluids flowing either parallel or counter-currently. Heat transfer is driven by local temperature differences between fluids separated by a physical barrier. The hotter fluid exits at reduced temperature while the colder fluid exits at increased temperature. Counter-current flow typically provides better temperature approach and higher efficiency than parallel flow configurations.
