Protein Mass Analysis

Protein mass analysis is the measurement of a protein’s molecular mass and related molecular features, providing essential information about its identity, composition, and modifications. In mass spectrometry, proteins are ionized, separated according to their mass-to-charge ratios, and detected as mass spectra; enzymatic digestion can produce peptides that support protein identification through peptide-mass fingerprinting or sequence analysis. The approach helps characterize post-translational modifications, processing events, and interactions, while revealing differences between protein samples. In biology, protein mass analysis supports studies of cellular pathways, disease-associated changes, biomarker discovery, structural biology, and quality assessment of purified or engineered proteins.
