Pleura of the Lungs

Die Pleura oder Pleuramembran ist eine doppelschichtige, seröse Membran, die die Lunge umschließt.
Die rechte und die linke Lunge werden von ihren jeweiligen Rippenfellen umhüllt, die durch das Mediastinum getrennt sind.
Die äußere parietale Pleura berührt die Brustwand, das Mediastinum und das Zwerchfell, während die innere viszerale Schicht die äußere Lungenoberfläche bedeckt.
Die Pleurahöhle zwischen diesen Schichten ist mit einer Schmierflüssigkeit gefüllt, die als Pleuraflüssigkeit bezeichnet wird.
Diese Flüssigkeit reduziert die Reibung zwischen den Schichten während der Atmung und erzeugt eine Oberflächenspannung, die der Lunge hilft, an der Brustwand zu haften.
Darüber hinaus ermöglicht die kohäsive Eigenschaft der Pleuraflüssigkeit die Ausdehnung der Lunge mit der Brustwand während der Atmung, wodurch sich die Lunge mit Luft füllen kann.
Die Rippenfelle bilden auch eine Grenze zwischen dem sich bewegenden Herzen und der Lunge, wodurch eine mögliche Störung ihrer Bewegung verhindert und die Ausbreitung von Infektionen begrenzt wird.
Rippenfellentzündung ist eine Entzündung des Brustfells, die häufig durch eine Lungenentzündung verursacht wird und zu aufgerauten Oberflächen und stechenden Schmerzen beim Atmen führt.

Die Lunge befindet sich in einem Hohlraum, der durch die Pleura abgeschirmt wird. Die Pleura, eine Art seröse Membran, umhüllt jede Lunge. Diese Membrananordnung besteht aus zwei Schichten: der viszeralen und der parietalen Pleura. Die viszerale Pleura kleidet die Oberfläche der Lunge aus. Die parietale Pleura hingegen ist die äußere Schicht und berührt die Brustwand, das Mediastinum und das Zwerchfell. Der Hilus ist der Verbindungspunkt zwischen der viszeralen und der parietalen Schicht. Der Raum zwischen der parietalen und der viszeralen Schicht wird als Pleurahöhle bezeichnet.

Neben ihrer Schutzfunktion erfüllen die Pleurae zwei wichtige Aufgaben: die Produktion von Pleuraflüssigkeit und die Bildung von Hohlräumen, die wichtige Organe schützen. Die  Mesothelzellen aus beiden Pleuraschichten sind für die Sekretion der Pleuraflüssigkeit verantwortlich. Diese Flüssigkeit schmiert die Pleuraoberflächen, minimiert Reibung und verhindert Schäden während der Atmung. Diese Flüssigkeit erzeugt auch eine Oberflächenspannung, die dazu beiträgt, dass die Lungen an der Thoraxwand haften und sich ausdehnen, wenn sich die Brusthöhle beim Einatmen vergrößert. Darüber hinaus dienen die Pleurae dazu, den Brustraum abzuschotten und wichtige Organe zu isolieren, um Störungen durch Organbewegungen zu verhindern und die Ausbreitung von Infektionen einzuschränken.

Eine Entzündung der viszeralen und parietalen Pleuramembranen, eine Pleuritis oder Rippenfellentzündung, führt zu Schmerzen aufgrund der Reibung zwischen diesen beiden Rippenfellen. Manchmal können sich auch Luft, Blut oder Eiter in den Pleurahöhlen ansammeln, ein Zustand, der als Pneumothorax, Hämothorax oder Pyothorax bezeichnet wird. Ein Pneumothorax, häufig das Ergebnis einer Brustoperation oder eines penetrierenden Brusttraumas wie einer Messer- oder Schusswunde, kann zu einem vollständigen Lungenkollaps führen. Das primäre Behandlungsziel besteht darin, Luft (oder Blut) aus dem Pleuraraum zu entfernen, um die Wiederausdehnung der Lunge zu erleichtern. In einigen Fällen kann sich ein leichter Pneumothorax von selbst auflösen; häufig ist jedoch die Platzierung eines Thoraxröhrchens erforderlich, um den Entleerungsprozess zu unterstützen.

The pleura are membranes that protect the lungs inside the chest cavity. They are a type of serous membrane and wrap around each lung. The pleura have two layers: the visceral pleura and the parietal pleura.

The visceral pleura covers the surface of the lung. The parietal pleura is the outer layer. It lines the thoracic wall, the mediastinum, and the diaphragm. The hilum is the point where the visceral and parietal layers connect. The space between these layers is called the pleural cavity.

The pleura do more than cover the lungs. Mesothelial cells in both layers produce pleural fluid. This fluid coats the surfaces and reduces friction during breathing. It also helps create surface tension, which keeps the lungs attached to the thoracic wall as the chest expands during inhalation.

The pleura also help divide the thoracic cavity into compartments. This separation helps protect major organs from movement in nearby structures and can limit the spread of infection. When the pleural membranes become inflamed, the condition is called pleurisy or pleuritis. It can cause pain because the two pleural layers rub against each other.

Air, blood, or pus can collect in the pleural cavity. These conditions are called pneumothorax, hemothorax, and pyothorax. Pneumothorax often follows chest surgery or a penetrating chest injury, such as a knife or bullet wound, and it may cause the lung to collapse completely. Treatment usually focuses on removing air or blood from the pleural space so the lung can expand again. In some cases, a minor pneumothorax may clear on its own, but a chest tube is often needed.

Content elaboration: The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract (alimentary canal) as well as various accessory organs including the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The digestive system processes and supplies the molecules needed to sustain the living tissues within the body through the absorption of nutrients. Six major functions of the digestive system include secretion, ingestion, mechanical processing, enzymatic digestion, absorption and excretion. The lining of the digestive system protects surrounding tissues from the mechanical and enzymatic stresses of the digestive process. Processes of the digestive system include the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules which are then absorbed by the digestive tract. Specific actions within the digestive system include mastication, peristalsis, segmentation and the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for digestion. The metabolic functions of the accessory organs play strategic roles in the breakdown of food products, the maintenance of glucose levels within the blood and the regulation of homeostasis in the body. Indigestible material is excreted as waste. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, conditions such as gallstones, heartburn, ulcers, dehydration, diarrhea, cirrhosis and cancers of the digestive system. Investigations are used to understand and explain the digestive system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.

Content elaboration: The respiratory system is comprised of the airways, lungs and diaphragm. The airways include the nasal and oral cavities, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli. The respiratory system transports and exchanges gases including oxygen and carbon dioxide. Processes involved in the respiratory system include respiration mechanics and gas exchange. Respiration mechanics is the process by which humans breathe and includes the movement of the diaphragm and pressure-volume relationships. Gas exchange refers to the diffusion of gas across the alveolar epithelium in the respiratory system and capillary endothelium of the cardiovascular system. Lung volumes and capacities can be measured using spirometry. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis and the effects of smoking and pollution. Investigations are used to understand and explain the respiratory system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
