Alveoli and Alveolar Ducts

À l’intérieur d’un lobule pulmonaire, les bronchioles terminales se ramifient en bronchioles respiratoires microscopiques, qui conduisent l’air vers la zone respiratoire des poumons.
Ces bronchioles se divisent ensuite en plusieurs canaux tapissés d’un épithélium squameux simple, connu sous le nom de canaux alvéolaires, qui se terminent par des structures ressemblant à du raisin appelées sacs alvéolaires.
Les alvéoles sont les structures épithéliales dilatées à l’intérieur de ces sacs alvéolaires.
Chaque alvéole est recouverte d’un vaste réseau capillaire avec des fibres élastiques qui l’entourent pour stabiliser les positions des alvéoles et des bronchioles respiratoires.
Une paroi alvéolaire comporte de nombreuses cellules épithéliales pulmonaires squameuses - pneumocytes de type I ou cellules alvéolaires de type I - qui facilitent les échanges gazeux.
Les parois alvéolaires ont également des cellules épithéliales cuboïdes appelées pneumocytes de type II, cellules alvéolaires de type II ou cellules septales. Ces cellules sécrètent du liquide alvéolaire, principalement composé d’un tensioactif, qui empêche le collapsus alvéolaire.
Il y a des macrophages alvéolaires ou des cellules de poussière dans les parois alvéolaires qui aident à éliminer les agents pathogènes inhalés et la poussière microscopique.
Chaque poumon contient environ 150 millions d’alvéoles, ce qui donne aux poumons une texture spongieuse.

La zone respiratoire du corps humain, qui s'oppose à la zone conductrice, comprend les structures qui participent activement aux échanges gazeux. Le début de cette zone est marqué par la convergence des bronchioles terminales vers les bronchioles respiratoires, la plus petite catégorie des bronchioles. Les bronchioles respiratoires cèdent la place aux canaux alvéolaires qui s'ouvrent sur une congrégation d'alvéoles. Activement impliquées dans les échanges gazeux, les alvéoles ressemblent à de minuscules sacs semblables à des grappes de raisin, tous étroitement reliés aux canaux alvéolaires.

De plus, un sac alvéolaire est simplement un regroupement de plusieurs alvéoles. Le diamètre d'une seule alvéole mesure environ 200 μm et sa nature élastique lui permet de se dilater lors de l'inhalation. Les alvéoles voisines sont reliées entre elles par des pores alvéolaires, de petites ouvertures qui assurent une pression d'air uniforme à travers les alvéoles et les poumons.

La paroi alvéolaire comprend trois types de cellules dominantes : les cellules de type I, de type II et les macrophages alvéolaires. Les cellules alvéolaires de type I, également appelées pneumocytes de type I, sont des cellules épithéliales squameuses formant jusqu'à 97 % de la surface alvéolaire et ayant une épaisseur d'environ 25 nm, avec une perméabilité élevée aux gaz. Dispersées parmi les cellules de type I se trouvent les cellules alvéolaires de type II (également appelées pneumocytes de type II ou cellules septales) qui sécrètent du surfactant pulmonaire, un mélange de phospholipides et de protéines qui diminue la tension superficielle de l'eau, empêchant l'effondrement alvéolaire. Les macrophages alvéolaires, cellules phagocytaires du système immunitaire, patrouillent la paroi alvéolaire pour éliminer les débris ou les agents pathogènes qui parviennent jusqu'aux alvéoles.

L'épithélium extrêmement fin formé par les cellules alvéolaires de type I est relié à une membrane basale élastique, elle aussi fine. Cette membrane forme la bordure de la membrane endothéliale des capillaires. La combinaison des membranes alvéolaires et capillaires donne naissance à une membrane respiratoire d'environ 0,5 μm (micromètre) d'épaisseur. Cette membrane respiratoire est le siège des échanges gazeux. Elle facilite la diffusion simple des gaz, ce qui permet à l'oxygène d'être absorbé par le sang pour être transporté et de libérer simultanément du CO_2 dans l'air alvéolaire.

The respiratory zone of the human body is where gas exchange happens. It begins when the terminal bronchioles branch into respiratory bronchioles, the smallest bronchiole type. These then lead into alveolar ducts and finally into clusters of alveoli.

Alveoli are tiny air sacs that look like bunches of grapes. They connect to alveolar ducts, and a group of alveoli forms an alveolar sac. A single alveolus is about 200 μm wide, and its elastic shape lets it expand during inhalation.

Nearby alveoli are linked by alveolar pores. These are small openings that help keep air pressure even across the alveoli and lungs. The alveolar wall also contains three main cell types: type I cells, type II cells, and alveolar macrophages.

Type I alveolar cells, also called type I pneumocytes, are flat epithelial cells. They cover up to 97 percent of the alveolar surface and are only about 25 nm thick, which makes them highly permeable to gases. Type II alveolar cells, also called type II pneumocytes or septal cells, release pulmonary surfactant, a mix of phospholipids and proteins that lowers water surface tension and helps prevent alveolar collapse. Alveolar macrophages act as phagocytic immune cells and remove debris or pathogens that reach the alveoli.

A very thin, elastic basement membrane lies under the type I cells. It meets the endothelial membrane of the capillaries. Together, these layers form the respiratory membrane, which is about 0.5 μm thick. This is the site of simple diffusion, where oxygen moves into the blood for transport and carbon dioxide moves into the alveolar air.

Content elaboration: The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract (alimentary canal) as well as various accessory organs including the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The digestive system processes and supplies the molecules needed to sustain the living tissues within the body through the absorption of nutrients. Six major functions of the digestive system include secretion, ingestion, mechanical processing, enzymatic digestion, absorption and excretion. The lining of the digestive system protects surrounding tissues from the mechanical and enzymatic stresses of the digestive process. Processes of the digestive system include the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules which are then absorbed by the digestive tract. Specific actions within the digestive system include mastication, peristalsis, segmentation and the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for digestion. The metabolic functions of the accessory organs play strategic roles in the breakdown of food products, the maintenance of glucose levels within the blood and the regulation of homeostasis in the body. Indigestible material is excreted as waste. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, conditions such as gallstones, heartburn, ulcers, dehydration, diarrhea, cirrhosis and cancers of the digestive system. Investigations are used to understand and explain the digestive system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.

The airways include the nasal and oral cavities, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli. The respiratory system transports and exchanges gases including oxygen and carbon dioxide. Processes involved in the respiratory system include respiration mechanics and gas exchange. Respiration mechanics is the process by which humans breathe and includes the movement of the diaphragm and pressure-volume relationships. Gas exchange refers to the diffusion of gas across the alveolar epithelium in the respiratory system and capillary endothelium of the cardiovascular system. Lung volumes and capacities can be measured using spirometry. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis and the effects of smoking and pollution.
