Respiratory Volumes and Capacities

Les volumes respiratoires définissent les différentes quantités d’air qui entrent et sortent des poumons, tandis que les capacités respiratoires sont des combinaisons de volumes respiratoires.
Ceux-ci peuvent être mesurés à l’aide d’un spiromètre et, illustré ici, il s’agit d’un enregistrement spirographique d’un adulte en bonne santé.
Le volume d’air échangé pendant la respiration normale est appelé volume courant ou TV.
Après une respiration normale, l’air qui peut être inhalé avec force forme le volume de réserve inspiratoire ou IRV.

Le système respiratoire est responsable de l'absorption d'oxygène et de l'expulsion du dioxyde de carbone du corps. Les volumes respiratoires décrivent le volume d'air dans les poumons à différentes phases du cycle respiratoire. Le volume courant correspond à l'air inspiré et expiré pendant une respiration normale et calme. Le volume de réserve inspiratoire correspond à l'air qui peut être inspiré avec force au-delà du volume courant. En revanche, le volume de réserve expiratoire correspond à l'air qui peut être expulsé des poumons après une expiration normale. Capacités respiratoires

Les capacités respiratoires, telles que la capacité inspiratoire, la capacité résiduelle fonctionnelle, la capacité vitale et la capacité pulmonaire totale, sont mesurées pour diagnostiquer les troubles respiratoires. La capacité inspiratoire (CI) est la quantité maximale d'air qui peut être inhalée après une expiration normale, calculée en additionnant le volume courant (VC) et le volume de réserve inspiratoire (VRI). La capacité résiduelle fonctionnelle (CRF) représente l'air dans les poumons après une expiration silencieuse. Il s'agit du volume résiduel (VR) et du volume de réserve expiratoire (VRE) combinés. La capacité vitale (CV) est la quantité maximale d'air qu'une personne peut expirer après avoir pris la respiration la plus profonde possible et est la somme de la VC, de la VRI et de la VRE. Enfin, la capacité pulmonaire totale (CPT) est la somme de tous les volumes pulmonaires et fournit des informations cruciales sur l'état respiratoire d'une personne. Ventilation minute

La ventilation minute, ou le volume total d'air inspiré et expiré chaque minute, est calculée en multipliant le volume courant par la fréquence respiratoire. Chez un adulte en bonne santé au repos, la ventilation minute est généralement d'environ 6 000 à 8 000 ml/min. Une ventilation minute inférieure à la normale peut indiquer un problème au niveau des poumons ou du système respiratoire. Ventilation alvéolaire

Lung volume measurements show how air moves in and out of the respiratory system during breathing. They help explain how the body takes in oxygen and removes carbon dioxide. Respiratory volumes and capacities also give useful information about lung function.

Tidal volume is the air breathed in and out during normal, quiet breathing. Inspiratory reserve volume is the extra air that can be forcefully inhaled beyond tidal volume. Expiratory reserve volume is the extra air that can be forcefully exhaled after a normal breath out. Residual volume is the air left in the lungs after a forceful exhale, and it helps keep the alveoli open so the lungs do not collapse.

Respiratory capacities combine these volumes into larger measurements. Inspiratory capacity is the maximum air that can be inhaled after a normal exhalation. It equals tidal volume plus inspiratory reserve volume. Functional residual capacity is the air left in the lungs after a quiet expiration. It equals residual volume plus expiratory reserve volume.

Vital capacity is the greatest amount of air a person can exhale after taking the deepest breath possible. It is the sum of tidal volume, inspiratory reserve volume, and expiratory reserve volume. Total lung capacity is the sum of all lung volumes and gives important information about respiratory status. In obstructive pulmonary disease, total lung capacity, functional residual capacity, and residual volume may increase because the lungs hyperinflate. In restrictive disease, vital capacity, total lung capacity, functional residual capacity, and residual volume decline because lung expansion is limited.

Minute ventilation is the total volume of air inspired and expired each minute. It is calculated by multiplying tidal volume by respiratory rate. In a healthy adult at rest, minute ventilation is usually about 6000 to 8000 mL/min. Lower-than-normal minute ventilation may suggest a problem with the lungs or the respiratory system.

Not all inhaled air reaches the respiratory zone. Some of it stays in the conducting airways, which is called anatomic dead space. Alveolar ventilation is the volume of air per minute that reaches the respiratory zone and takes part in external respiration. It is calculated by multiplying respiratory rate by the difference between tidal volume and the air left in anatomic dead space. In a healthy adult at rest, alveolar ventilation is usually about 4200 mL/min. It gives a better measure of gas exchange in the lungs than minute ventilation alone. Together, minute ventilation and alveolar ventilation are key measures of pulmonary function and can help diagnose respiratory disorders and monitor treatment progress.

The digestive system processes and supplies the molecules needed to sustain the living tissues within the body through the absorption of nutrients. Six major functions of the digestive system include secretion, ingestion, mechanical processing, enzymatic digestion, absorption and excretion. The lining of the digestive system protects surrounding tissues from the mechanical and enzymatic stresses of the digestive process. Processes of the digestive system include the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules which are then absorbed by the digestive tract. Specific actions within the digestive system include mastication, peristalsis, segmentation and the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for digestion. The metabolic functions of the accessory organs play strategic roles in the breakdown of food products, the maintenance of glucose levels within the blood and the regulation of homeostasis in the body. Indigestible material is excreted as waste. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, conditions such as gallstones, heartburn, ulcers, dehydration, diarrhea, cirrhosis and cancers of the digestive system. Investigations are used to understand and explain the digestive system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.

The airways include the nasal and oral cavities, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli. The respiratory system transports and exchanges gases including oxygen and carbon dioxide. Processes involved in the respiratory system include respiration mechanics and gas exchange. Respiration mechanics is the process by which humans breathe and includes the movement of the diaphragm and pressure-volume relationships. Gas exchange refers to the diffusion of gas across the alveolar epithelium in the respiratory system and capillary endothelium of the cardiovascular system. Lung volumes and capacities can be measured using spirometry. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis and the effects of smoking and pollution.
