Trachea

La trachea o trachea inizia dalla laringe e si estende nel mediastino, biforcandosi in due bronchi principali nella regione medio-toracica.
La parete tracheale è composta da quattro strati: la mucosa, la sottomucosa, la cartilagine ialina e l'avventizia.
La mucosa è dotata di epitelio colonnare pseudostratificato ciliato e lamina propria, che offrono protezione contro le particelle di polvere presenti nell'aria.
La sottomucosa contiene tessuto connettivo areolare con ghiandole sierodure e la cartilagine ialina presenta da 16 a 20 anelli incompleti che forniscono un supporto semirigido, prevenendo l'ostruzione delle vie aeree e accogliendo l'espansione esofagea durante il passaggio del cibo.
L'avventizia è composta da tessuto connettivo areolare che attacca la trachea ai tessuti adiacenti.
La flessibilità della trachea, fornita dai suoi elementi elastici, è vitale per il suo movimento durante il nostro ciclo respiratorio.

La trachea è sostenuta e stabilizzata da vari muscoli:

Sternoioideo: origina dallo sterno e si inserisce sull'osso ioide, fornendo stabilità alla trachea.

Sternotiroideo: questo muscolo corre parallelo allo sternoioideo e aiuta a sostenere la trachea.

Tiroioideo: collega la cartilagine tiroidea all'osso ioide e aiuta a sollevare la laringe durante la deglutizione.

Funzioni delle parti:

Mucosa: lo strato mucoso aiuta a inumidire e riscaldare l'aria inalata mentre intrappola particelle e patogeni con muco e ciglia.

Condizioni cliniche associate alla trachea:

The trachea is the windpipe, and it is a key airway in the human respiratory system. It carries air between the larynx and the bronchi so oxygen can reach the lungs. About half of the trachea lies in the neck, and it sits in front of the esophagus.

In an average adult, the trachea is about 10 to 12 cm long. It extends from the larynx at the level of the sixth cervical vertebra to the level of the fifth thoracic vertebra. Its wall is supported by C-shaped cartilaginous rings. The back side is made of smooth muscle fibers called the trachealis muscle, which gives the airway flexibility during swallowing.

The tracheal wall has several layers. The mucosa is the innermost layer. It is lined with pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium, which includes goblet cells that make mucus. The cilia move mucus and debris away from the lungs.

Below the mucosa is the submucosa. This layer contains connective tissue, blood vessels, nerves, and seromucous glands. It helps warm and moisten incoming air. The trachea is also reinforced by hyaline cartilage rings, and these C-shaped rings keep the airway rigid so it does not collapse during breathing. The outermost layer is the adventitia, which is connective tissue that binds the trachea to nearby structures.

Several muscles help support and stabilize the trachea. The sternohyoid runs from the sternum to the hyoid bone. The sternothyroid runs parallel to it and also helps support the trachea. The thyrohyoid connects the thyroid cartilage to the hyoid bone and helps elevate the larynx during swallowing.

Each part of the trachea has an important job. The mucosa warms and moistens inhaled air while trapping particles and pathogens in mucus and cilia. The cartilaginous rings keep the trachea open so air can pass through. The trachealis muscle allows the airway to adjust during swallowing and coughing.

The trachea can be affected by clinical conditions such as tracheal stenosis, tracheomalacia, and tracheal tumors. Tracheal stenosis is narrowing of the trachea and may result from injury, inflammation, or tumors. Tracheomalacia involves weakened tracheal cartilage, which can lead to collapse during breathing. Tracheal tumors may be benign or malignant.

Treatment depends on the problem. Dilation, stenting, or surgical reconstruction may be used for tracheal stenosis. Tracheomalacia may be treated with tracheostomy or continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. Tracheal tumors may be treated with surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these methods.

In severe airway obstruction, a tracheotomy may be performed to create an opening in the trachea through the neck and bypass the blockage. Intubation places a tube through the mouth or nose into the trachea to secure the airway during surgery, respiratory distress, or unconsciousness. The Heimlich maneuver is an emergency technique that uses abdominal pressure to force air out and clear a foreign object from the trachea. Any tracheal condition or treatment should be managed by healthcare professionals.

Content elaboration: The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract (alimentary canal) as well as various accessory organs including the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The digestive system processes and supplies the molecules needed to sustain the living tissues within the body through the absorption of nutrients. Six major functions of the digestive system include secretion, ingestion, mechanical processing, enzymatic digestion, absorption and excretion. The lining of the digestive system protects surrounding tissues from the mechanical and enzymatic stresses of the digestive process. Processes of the digestive system include the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules which are then absorbed by the digestive tract. Specific actions within the digestive system include mastication, peristalsis, segmentation and the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for digestion. The metabolic functions of the accessory organs play strategic roles in the breakdown of food products, the maintenance of glucose levels within the blood and the regulation of homeostasis in the body. Indigestible material is excreted as waste. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, conditions such as gallstones, heartburn, ulcers, dehydration, diarrhea, cirrhosis and cancers of the digestive system. Investigations are used to understand and explain the digestive system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.

The airways include the nasal and oral cavities, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli. The respiratory system transports and exchanges gases including oxygen and carbon dioxide. Processes involved in the respiratory system include respiration mechanics and gas exchange. Respiration mechanics is the process by which humans breathe and includes the movement of the diaphragm and pressure-volume relationships. Gas exchange refers to the diffusion of gas across the alveolar epithelium in the respiratory system and capillary endothelium of the cardiovascular system. Lung volumes and capacities can be measured using spirometry. Homeostatic imbalances are explored.
