呼吸中枢と呼ばれる脳幹のニューロンのグループは、呼吸の調節を媒介します。
2つの主要な中心は、延髄の髄質呼吸中枢と橋の橋呼吸中枢です。
髄質呼吸中枢には、背側呼吸群(DRG)と腹側呼吸群(VRG)の2つの要素があります。
通常の呼吸中、DRGは横隔神経と肋間神経を介して横隔膜と外部肋間筋にインパルスを送り、それらを収縮させて吸入を誘発します。
約2秒後、DRGが非アクティブになり、これらの筋肉が弛緩して呼気を引き起こします。
VRGは、そのプレベッツィンガー複合体を通じて、DRGニューロンが活動電位を発火する速度を調節することにより、呼吸リズムを生成します。
