Vascular Surgery Protocol

A vascular surgery protocol is a structured clinical framework for evaluating, treating, and monitoring disorders of arteries and veins, helping teams deliver consistent and safe care. Depending on the condition, it coordinates preoperative imaging and risk assessment with vessel exposure, proximal and distal control, repair or revascularization, and postoperative surveillance for bleeding, thrombosis, or impaired perfusion. These protocols support procedures such as aneurysm repair, treatment of arterial occlusion, and management of vascular trauma. By standardizing decisions and communication across the surgical team, they improve procedural planning, support timely recognition of complications, and provide a reproducible basis for clinical training and research.

Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) replacement strategies and gene-based therapy are considered for several retinal degenerative conditions. For clinical translation, large eye animal models are required to study surgical techniques applicable in patients. Here we present a rabbit model for subretinal surgery geared towards RPE transplantation, which is versatile and cost-efficient.

Tools used for visualizing vascular regeneration require methods for contrasting the vascular trees. This film demonstrated a delicate injection technique used to achieve optimal contrasting of the vascular trees and illustrate the potential benefits resulting from a detailed analysis of the resulting specimen using µCT and histological serial sections.

Mechanically isolated stromal vascular fraction (SVF) in combination with a fibrin hydrogel offers an easy and efficient carrier for viable adipose-derived stromal cells for various indications, including tissue engineering and or wound healing purposes. Here, we present the preparation of a mechanical SVF (mSVF)-fibrin hydrogel construct for translational research and clinical application.
