Den tvungne svømme testen er en gnaver adfærdsmæssige test, der anvendes til evaluering af antidepressiv medicin, antidepressiv effekt af nye forbindelser, og eksperimentelle manipulationer, der tilsigter at lette eller forebygge depressive-lignende tilstande. Mus er placeret i en uundgåelig gennemsigtig beholder, der er fyldt med vand og deres flugt relateret mobilitet adfærd måles. Den tvungne svømme testen er ligetil at foretage pålideligt, og det kræver minimal specialiseret udstyr. En vellykket gennemførelse af den tvungne svømme testen kræver overholdelse af visse proceduremæssige detaljer og minimering af uberettigede stress til mus. I protokollen beskrivelsen og den ledsagende video, forklarer vi, hvordan man fører musen version af denne test med fokus på potentielle faldgruber, der kan være til skade for fortolkning af resultater og hvordan man undgår dem. FST (også kaldet Porsolt svømme-test) blev udviklet først for rotter, og derefter modificeret til mus ved Porsolt og kolleger 12,13. Ud over de ovenfor beskrevne protokol succes i vores laboratorium, har en række stort set subtil test modifikationer blevet offentliggjort (se Hascoët og Bourin for en fuldstændig gennemgang 1).
