Metabolic Syndrome Model

A metabolic syndrome model is an experimental system that reproduces the interconnected metabolic abnormalities of metabolic syndrome, including insulin resistance, abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, and elevated blood pressure. These models typically develop through coordinated changes in glucose and lipid metabolism, often under defined dietary, genetic, or environmental conditions, allowing researchers to examine how disrupted energy balance promotes systemic disease. In medicine, metabolic syndrome models support investigation of disease mechanisms, identification of biomarkers, and evaluation of preventive or therapeutic interventions. They also help clarify links between metabolic dysfunction, cardiovascular risk, and related chronic conditions.

An Experimental Model of Diet-Induced Metabolic Syndrome in Rabbit: Methodological Considerations, Development, and Assessment

We describe methods to develop an experimental model of diet-induced metabolic syndrome (MetS) in rabbits using a high-fat, high-sucrose diet. Animals developed central obesity, mild hypertension, pre-diabetes, and dyslipidemia, thus reproducing the main components of human MetS. This chronic model will allow acquisition of knowledge underlying mechanisms of disease progression.

A Zebrafish Model of Diabetes Mellitus and Metabolic Memory

Metabolic memory is the phenomenon by which diabetic complications persist and progress unimpeded even after euglycemia is achieved pharmaceutically. Here we describe a diabetes mellitus zebrafish model which is unique in that it allows for the examination of the mitotically transmissible epigenetic components of metabolic memory in vivo.

Zebrafish represent a powerful vertebrate model that has been under-utilised for metabolic studies. Here we describe a rapid way to measure the in vivo metabolic profile of developing zebrafish that allows the comparison of different mitochondrial function parameters between genetically or pharmacologically manipulated embryos, thereby increasing the applicability of this organism.

Isolation of Atrial Cardiomyocytes from a Rat Model of Metabolic Syndrome-related Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction

Here, we describe an optimized, Langendorff-based procedure for the isolation of single-cell atrial cardiomyocytes from a rat model of metabolic syndrome-related heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. A manual regulation of intraluminal pressure of cardiac cavities is implemented to yield functionally intact myocytes suitable for excitation-contraction-coupling studies.
