Enzymatic Assay

An enzymatic assay is a laboratory method used to measure an enzyme’s activity, abundance, or interaction with a substrate, making it central to biochemical and biological research. The assay follows an enzyme-catalyzed reaction under controlled conditions, typically quantifying substrate consumption or product formation through changes in absorbance, fluorescence, or another measurable signal. Researchers use enzymatic assays to characterize reaction rates, determine optimal conditions, compare enzyme function, and evaluate inhibitors or activators. These measurements support studies of metabolism, cellular regulation, disease mechanisms, and drug development while providing quantitative evidence about how biological reactions operate.

A Dye Release Assay to Quantify Enzymatic Activity of Antimicrobial Proteins

2025

This video demonstrates the dye release assay for quantifying the enzymatic activity of antimicrobial proteins. The antimicrobial protein degrades the bacteria's dye-labeled cell wall and releases the dye molecules turning the solution blue. The absorbance of the solution correlates with the enzymatic activity of the antimicrobial protein.
