Anus Protrusion

Anus protrusion describes the visible projection of tissue through or around the anal opening, a clinical sign that may reflect rectal prolapse, mucosal prolapse, hemorrhoids, or other anorectal conditions. It occurs when supporting tissues weaken or excessive pressure during straining, constipation, childbirth, chronic coughing, or defecation allows the rectal wall or swollen vascular tissue to extend outward. Assessment considers the appearance, whether the protrusion reduces spontaneously, associated pain or bleeding, and changes in bowel control. Accurate identification helps distinguish conditions that may respond to dietary and bowel-management measures from those requiring procedural or surgical treatment, supporting timely care and prevention of complications.

Evaluating the rectum and anus plays a crucial role in conducting a thorough physical examination of the gastrointestinal system. Although it may be uncomfortable and often embarrassing for the patient, it holds immense diagnostic value, particularly in detecting gastrointestinal diseases and abnormalities. This guide will explain how to perform this assessment using inspection and palpation methods. Rectal Inspection Begin by inspecting the perianal and anal areas for color, texture, rashes,...

Types of Membrane Protrusions

2023

The protrusion of the cell surface is an initial step for several cellular processes, including cell migration, phagocytosis, and neurite outgrowth. These membrane protrusions are a result of cytoskeletal rearrangement. The most widely observed cell protrusions include lamellipodia, pseudopodia, filopodia, microvilli, invadopodia, and podosomes. These protrusions can be of two types — static or dynamic. The microvilli, an example of stable protrusions, are finger-like projections with a...
