PUBLISHING PROCESS

Overview

JoVE will handle all aspects of video production, including filming and editing, for accepted video articles at locations within our Videographer Network. If you are outside of our network, then please see our  Editorial Policies.

The first step of the process is to submit an original manuscript according to JoVE's guidelines. The manuscript must complete internal editorial review, followed by external peer review. Once your manuscript is accepted, JoVE's Ph.D. scriptwriters will translate your manuscript into a video script, and we will send a professional videographer to your location to shoot the video in a single day. Next, JoVE will edit your video and add professional voice-over talent to narrate the science shown on film. Your video article will then be published online and indexed in PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, SciFinder, and Scopus.

Step 1: Manuscript Preparation

Here is a list of required documents you will need for your JoVE submission:

  1. A manuscript prepared using JoVE's Manuscript Template
  2. A single signed Author License Agreement or a UK Author License Agreement
  3. Separate figure files/data tables
  4. Separate Excel spreadsheet using our Table of Specific Materials/Equipment

Here are some resources that may help you prepare your submission:

  1. JoVE Reference Manager Style File (Reference Manager)
  2. JoVE CSL Style File (Mendeley)
  3. JoVE EndNote Styling

Here are Instructions on How To Submit your manuscript.

If you have any questions about submission of your manuscript, please contact submissions@jove.com.

Step 2: Editorial & Peer Review

Editorial Review

All submitted manuscripts undergo editorial review upon submission. Editorial review ensures that all manuscripts are written according to JoVE's guidelines and that the protocol is filmable. Manuscripts that do not meet JoVE's guidelines will require revisions or may be rejected. Upon completion of editorial review, your manuscript will be peer reviewed and you will be charged a publication fee.

Peer Review

Following editorial review, all manuscripts are subjected to a rigorous peer review process by experts in your field. Peer review comments are intended to improve the overall quality and scientific rigor of the manuscript. When your manuscript has successfully passed peer review, it will be finalized and considered in-press.

Step 3: Scripting & Filming

Once your manuscript has been finalized, you will be contacted by JoVE's production coordinator (within ~5 business days after finalization). The production coordinator will connect you with your scriptwriter and schedule your video shoot. JoVE's Ph.D. level scriptwriters will turn your protocol into a video script to help you and the videographers plan your video. You will approve the script prior to filming.

On the day of the shoot, JoVE's professional videographers will come to your lab (or filming location) and film your protocol according to your video script. The videographers are trained to film in research environments and will have all the tools necessary to film your unique protocol. The complete video filming process will be completed within one day (typically 6-8 hours). The date of filming may fall anywhere from several weeks to several months after manuscript finalization, depending on several factors, including your lab's availability and the preparation time required for your experiment.

Step 4: Video Editing

After filming, the first step of video production is to record a professional voice-over for your video. We then map this voice-over to the video clips recorded at your lab. Next, we assemble a first draft of your video, while simultaneously building your article's webpage. Once complete, we have a first draft of your JoVE publication ready for your review. Video editing and finalization generally takes several weeks to months to complete before your video is displayed on the JoVE website.

Step 5: Proofing & Publication

Now that you have a first draft of your JoVE publication, you can provide comments on your article’s video, voice-over, and written text. We ask that you submit a single round of revisions from all authors. Once your video article is finished and approved by you and your co-authors, it moves into the queue for publication. Your video article will be published in JoVE about a month following your approval of the final video and manuscript.

Indexing

Your JoVE article abstract will appear in PubMed approximately two weeks after publication. JoVE is indexed in MEDLINE/PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, SciFinder and other scientific indexing services.
