This study demonstrates a microfluidic approach to investigate axonal transport in developing motor neurons derived from mouse embryonic spinal cord tissues. By creating a concentration gradient of growth factors, the axons are directed towards distal wells, allowing for real-time imaging of organelle movement.
Quantitative tracking of axonal organelle transport in motor neurons using microfluidic devices enables precise interrogation of neuronal trafficking mechanisms relevant to neurodegenerative disease models. This approach supports predictive confidence in early discovery by providing reproducible, live-cell data on subcellular dynamics. Integration of such systems enhances portfolio decision-making at the interface of target validation and preclinical model development.
This microfluidic-based live imaging method fits at the intersection of early discovery, target validation, and preclinical research for neurodegenerative disease programs.
