Il laser a femtosecondi strettamente focalizzato può fornire una stimolazione precisa alle cellule aggiungendosi a una microscopia confocale che consenta l'osservazione e la fotostimolazione in tempo reale. La fotostimolazione può attivare eventi molecolari cellulari, tra cui percorso di segnalazione ERK e lampi mitocondriali di specie reattive dell'ossigeno.
