Evaluating p97 Inhibitor Analogues for Their Domain Selectivity and Potency against the p97-p47 Complex.

We previously found that p97 ATPase inhibitors 2-(2-amino-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)-N-benzyl-8-methoxyquinazolin-4-amine (ML240) and 2-(2H-benzo[b][1,4]oxazin-4(3H)-yl)-N-benzyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroquinazolin-4-amine (ML241) specifically target the D2 domain of wild-type p97. In addition, one of the major p97 cofactors, p47, decreases their potencies by ?50-fold. In contrast, N(2) ,N(4) -dibenzylquinazoline-2,4-diamine (DBeQ) targets both the D1 and D2 domains and shows only a four- to sixfold decrease in potency against the p97-p47 complex. To elucidate structure-activity relationships for the inhibitors, we screened 200 p97 inhibitor analogues for their ability to inhibit the ATPase activity of either or both of the D1 or D2 domains, as well for their effects on p47 potency. The selectivity of 29 of these compounds was further examined by eight-dose titrations. Four compounds showed modest selectivity for inhibiting the ATPase activity of D1. Eleven compounds inhibited D2 with greater potencies, and four showed similar potencies against D1 and D2. p47 decreased the potencies of the majority of the compounds and increased the potencies of five compounds. These results highlight the possibility of developing domain-selective and complex-specific p97 inhibitors in order to further elucidate the physiological roles of p97 and its cofactors.

Two new metal-organic frameworks () were ionothermally obtained by the reaction of a biphenyltetracarboxylic sodium (Na4BPTC) ligand and M(OOCCH3)2 (M = Co() and Mn()). Crystal structure analysis reveals that is a Co3Na6 unit-based three dimensional heterometallic MOF, while exhibits a {Mn(COO)n} chain-based three-dimensional framework. Furthermore, the magnetic measurement shows that both of them have anti-ferromagnetic properties. A combination of Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulation uncovers that in the coupling parameters between two adjacent Mn(ii) ions are J1 = -2.0 cm(-1) and J2 = -1.6 cm(-1), and the magnetism mainly originates from the propagation of Mn(ii) ions by the super-exchange of carboxylates. Interestingly, the superexchange modes of J1 and J2 are different. Two spin nets of -/+/- dominate in the coupling for J1, while for J2 there are two spin nets of -/+/- and one spin net of +/-/+.

A series of 2-(3-butynoicamidophenyl)benzothiazole derivatives were synthesized starting from 4-fluoro-3-nitrobenzoic acid. Structures of all the synthesized compounds were confirmed by 1H NMR and HR-MS. Their antitumor activities against human tumor cells lines (HCT116, Mia-PaCa2, U87-MG, A549, NCI-H1975) were evaluated by MTT assay. The results revealed that most of the synthesized compounds showed potent activities against HCT116, Mia-PaCa2, U87-MG tumor cells lines. Particularly, compounds 14c and 14h exhibited better activity with IC50 values of 1 x 10(-8) mol x L(-1) against U87-MG and HCT116 respectively. The structure-activity relationship of compounds was also discussed preliminarily.

PM10 and PM2.5 aerosol particle samples were collected at a subway station in Shanghai and their morphology, chemical composition and transition metal species were studied. The mass concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 inside the subway station were significantly higher than those measured in aboveground ambient air. The PM levels inside subway were much higher than the state control limit. The aerosol composition in the metro station was quite different from that of the aboveground urban particles. Concentrations of Fe, Mn and Cr were higher than the averages of aboveground urban air particles by factors of 8, 2, and 2, respectively, showing a substantial enrichment in subway. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis showed that the subway particles had flat surfaces in combination with parallel scratches and sharp edges and looked like metal sheets or flakes. Furthermore, analysis of the atomic composition of typical subway particles by energy dispersive X-Ray (EDX) spectroscopy showed that oxygen and iron dominated the mass of the particles. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy results showed that a fraction (> 26%) of the total iron in the PM10 was in the form of pure Fe, while in the street particles Fe(III) was shown to be a significant fraction of the total iron. The work demonstrated that the underground subway stations in Shanghai were an important microenvironment for exposure to transition metal aerosol for the people taking subway train for commuting every day and those who work in the subway stations, and the metal particle exposure for people in the subway station should not be ignored.

Downconversion materials, which can convert one high-energy photon to two low-energy photons, have provided a promising avenue for the enhancement of solar cell efficiency. In this work, the Pr3+-Yb3+ codoped 25GeS2-35Ga2S3-40CsCl chalcohalide glasses were synthesized in a vacuumed silica ampoule by the melting-quenching technique. Under 474 nm excitation, the visible and near-IR emission spectra reveal the energy transfer from Pr3+ to Yb3+ ions, resulting in the intense 1008 nm near-IR emission for the c-Si solar cells. By tuning the excitation laser power, it is determined that one visible photon has been cut into two near-IR photons during the energy transfer process. With the help of an integrated sphere, the real quantum yields of near-IR emissions were calculated. For the 0.2Pr2S3-0.2Yb2S3 (in mol.%) codoped chalcohalide glass, the quantum yield equals 10.8%. Although this efficiency is still low, this result will open a new route to realize the efficient spectral modification of the solar spectrum.

Little is known about the likelihood and degree of hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation in hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) seropositive patients with disseminated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) receiving chemotherapy. Between January 2003 and December 2013, all HBsAg seropositive patients with metastatic NSCLC receiving cytotoxic chemotherapy were retrospectively evaluated. The morbidity and mortality of HBV reactivation, risk factors associated with reactivation, as well as the efficacy of preemptive lamivudine were investigated. Of 258 patients who were eligible for the present study, 176 were treated without antiviral prophylaxis and 82 received preemptive lamivudine. Patients without lamivudine prophylaxis had a significantly higher prevalence of HBV reactivation (19.3 vs 6.1 %, p = 0.006) and severe hepatitis attributable to reactivation (11.8 vs 3.7 %, p = 0.034) than those with preemptive lamivudine. However, no significant difference in mortality due to reactivation was noted between patients with or without prophylactic lamivudine (0 vs 2.3 %, p = 0.310). Furthermore, patients who developed HBV reactivation were indentified to have a higher rate of HBeAg seropositivity (74.4 vs 43.4 %, p < 0.001), serum HBV-DNA level of 10(4) copies/ml or greater (76.9 vs 47.9 %, p = 0.001), coexisting liver metastasis (50.0 vs 40.6 %, p = 0.033) and treatment with more than 4 cycles of chemotherapy (56.4 vs 39.3 %, p = 0.046) than those who did not experienced reactivation. The current study has demonstrated that preemptive lamivudine significantly reduced the prevalence of HBV reactivation in HBsAg seropositive patients with metastatic NSCLC receiving systemic chemotherapy.

The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of biodegradation on the shear strength of municipal solid waste (MSW), leachate, and biogas production. The direct shear (DS) test shows that the shear strength of waste in the initial stages is mainly depended on its composition and inter-structure. After the waste has been in a landfill for 30 days, the waste's increased biodegradation exhibited a great influence on the waste's shear strength. The increase of moisture content in the waste mass might cause a decrease of its shear strength. Tri-axial tests under consolidation-drained (CD) condition show that the shear strength of the cohesion and friction angle for degraded samples increased when the defined axial strain increased from 5 to 20 %. The cohesion varied from 35.90 to 66.42 kPa and the drained friction angle ranged between 29° and 38°. The measurements of shear strength properties are utilized to assess the slope stability of landfills.

A Gram-staining-positive, endospore-forming, moderately alkaliphilic bacterium, strain NPK15(T), was isolated from a typical sandy loam soil under long-term NPK fertilization in northern China and was subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. The diamino acid of the cell-wall peptidoglycan of strain NPK15(T) was found to be meso-diaminopimelic acid and the cell-wall sugars were xylose, glucose and traces of mannose. The only respiratory quinone found in strain NPK15(T) was menaquinone 7 (MK-7). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C(15?:?0), anteiso-C(15?:?0), C(16?:?0) and C(16?:?1)?6c/C(16?:?1)?7c. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. Phylogenetic analysis of the strain based on its 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that it was related most closely to 'Bacillus thaonhiensis' KACC 17216 (99.59%), B. songklensis KCTC 13881(T) (99.52%) and B. abyssalis CCTCC AB 2012074(T) (99.00%). DNA-DNA hybridization results indicated that the strain was distinct from other species of the genus Bacillus, the degree of relatedness being 35.4% with B. abyssalis CCTCC AB 2012074(T), 39.7% with B. songklensis KCTC 13881(T) and 51.2% with 'B. thaonhiensis' KACC 17216. The DNA G+C content of strain NPK15(T) was 45.5 mol%. Phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and molecular analyses identified strain NPK15(T) as a member of a novel species of the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus fengqiuensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NPK15(T) (?=?DSM 26745(T)?=?CCTCC AB 2013156(T)).

The link between circulating lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) and newly diagnosed metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is not fully defined. The study was conducted to evaluate the prognostic impact of LMR on survival outcomes in previously untreated metastatic NSCLC patients receiving platinum-based doublet. Chemotherapy-naive metastatic NSCLC patients undergoing platinum-based doublet were retrospectively enrolled. Clinical features regarding gender, age, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status, histology, absolute lymphocyte count (ALC), absolute monocyte count (AMC) and LMR were collected to determinate their prognostic impact on progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Up to 370 patients were eligible for the study. By univariate analysis, ECOG performance status, histology, ALC, AMC and LMR were showed to be significantly associated with PFS and OS. In subsequent Cox multivariate analysis, non-squamous cell carcinoma, ALC ? 2.45 × 10(9)/L, AMC <0.45 × 10(9)/L and LMR ? 4.56 were demonstrated to be independently correlated with better PFS. In addition, independent favorable prognostic factors for OS were only limited to LMR ? 4.56 and non-squamous cell carcinoma, whereas ECOG performance status of 2 and AMC ? 0.45 × 10(9)/L remained as independently inferior prognostic indicators for OS. Our findings implicate that circulating AMC and LMR are regarded as independent prognostic factors for PFS and OS in previously untreated metastatic NSCLC patients receiving platinum-based doublet.

In this study, serum free and total light chains (sFLC/sTLC) were measured in 108 serum samples of therapy-naïve patients with DLBCL. Clinicopathologic data and survival outcomes were analyzed according to the results of sFLC/sTLC measurements. Moreover, the association of sFLC/sTLC with absolute monocyte count (AMC) and absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) was evaluated. Elevated sFLC and abnormal ?/? ratio was present in 42.6% (51/108) and 4.6% (5/108) of patients, respectively. sTLC was successfully measured in 107 serum samples, abnormal sTLC and abnormal ?/? ratio was found in 28.0% (30/107) and 26.2% (28/107) of patients, respectively. Patients with elevated sFLC more frequently displayed adverse clinical characteristics, including age (P=0.001), B symptoms (P=0.022), low ALC (P=0.024) and hyperglobulinemia (P=0.012). Patients with elevated sFLC had an inferior overall survival (OS) (P=0.012) and tended to have shorter progression-free survival (PFS) (P=0.061) compared to patients with normal sFLC. Abnormal sTLC or abnormal sTLC ratio showed no significant association with clinical outcomes, with exception of abnormal concurrent ? and ?. Only association of sFLC and ALC with survival remained significant after adjusting for the International Prognostic Index (IPI). The measurement of sFLC and ALC at diagnosis might be useful for the prognostic stratification of patients and sTLC measurement was of little prognostic utility in DLBCL.

Inflammation has been demonstrated to be widely involved in the carcinogenesis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). However, the prognostic significance of lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR) in metastatic NPC is not fully addressed. The purpose of the study is to investigate the prognostic impact of pre-treatment absolute lymphocyte count (ALC), absolute monocyte count (AMC), and LMR on patients with newly diagnosed metastatic NPC undergoing chemotherapy. Between January 2006 and December 2010, patients with newly diagnosed metastatic NPC undergoing chemotherapy were retrospectively collected. The prognostic significance of baseline clinical features and inflammatory markers was investigated. A total of 256 patients were eligible for the study. The best cut-off value of ALC, AMC, and LMR was 2.25?×?10(9)/L, 0.35?×?10(9)/L, and 5.07, respectively. A room temperature liquid metal based electroosmotic flow (EOF) pump has been proposed in this work. This low-cost EOF pump is convenient for both fabrication and integration. It utilizes polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microchannels filled with the liquid-metal as non-contact pump electrodes. The electrode channels are fabricated symmetrically to both sides of the pumping channel, having no contact with the pumping channel. To test the pumping performance of the EOF pump, the mean flow velocities of the fluid (DI water) in the EOF pumps were experimentally measured by tracing the fluorescent microparticles in the flow. To provide guidance for designing a low voltage EOF pump, parametric studies on dimensions of the electrode and pumping channels were performed in this work. According to the experimental results, the pumping speed can reach 5.93 ?m s(-1) at a driving voltage of only 1.6 V, when the gap between the electrode and the pumping channel is 20 ?m. Injecting a room temperature liquid metal into microchannels can provide a simple, rapid, low-cost but accurately self-aligned way to fabricate microelectrodes for EOF pumps, which is a promising method to achieve the miniaturization and integration of the EOF pump in microfluidic systems. The non-contact liquid electrodes have no influence on the fluid in the pumping channel when pumping, reducing Joule heat generation and preventing gas bubble formation at the surface of electrodes. The pump has great potential to drive a wide range of fluids, such as drug reagents, cell suspensions and biological macromolecule solutions.

This study aims to evaluate an osteoporosis self-assessment tool for Asians (OSTA) and quantitative bone ultrasound (QUS) and their combination in detecting populations at high risk for osteoporosis, and to determine the best cutoff value for the diagnosis of osteoporosis among elderly Chinese men. A group of Chinese men, aged ? 60 years, recruited from the health checkup population of Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, were included. The OSTA index was calculated from age and weight. Bone mineral density (BMD) at left hip (femoral neck, internal, and total hip) and lumbar spine (L1-L4, L-Total) was measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and calcaneal BMD was measured with QUS. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to determine the best cutoff values, sensitivity, and specificity. The area under the curve (AUC) between the different screening tools was compared. Our study included 472 men with mean age of 78.0 years. The prevalence of osteoporosis was 27.7 %.The best cutoff for OSTA was -3.5 for predicting men with osteoporosis at any site; this yielded a sensitivity and specificity of 47.3 % and 76.8 %, respectively. The AUC for OSTA was 0.676. The optimal cutoff for QUS-T score was -1.25, with a sensitivity of 80.4 % and specificity of 59.7 %. The AUC for QUS-T score was 0.762. Combining QUS with OSTA improved the specificity to 92.9 % but reduced sensitivity to 36.1 %. A new variable derived from a combination of OSTA and the QUS-T score gave a better performance, with sensitivity of 70.1 % and specificity of 72.1 %; the AUC for this variable was 0.771, which was greater than OSTA but not different from QUS alone. In conclusion, OSTA and QUS, respectively, and their combination may help find populations at high risk for osteoporosis, which could be an alternative method for diagnosing osteoporosis, especially in areas where DXA measurement is not accessible.

Small GTPases, RacA and Cdc42, act as molecular switches in fungi, regulating cell signaling, cytoskeletal organization, polar growth and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, the latter by influencing the activity of the NADPH oxidase complex. In this study, the racA and cdc42 genes from Nomuraea rileyi were cloned and shown to encode 218 and 184 amino acid proteins, respectively. To determine the functions of racA and cdc42, gene-silencing mutants (racARM, cdc42RM and racA&cdc42RM, respectively) were generated using RNA silencing technology. In racARM and cdc42RM, the conidial and microsclerotium (MS) yields, ROS production and virulence were reduced, the hyphal extension rate was decreased and the dimorphic switch was delayed. On the other hand, the double-silencing mutants showed growth retardation and virtually no conidia, MS or ROS production. The transcription levels of the noxA and noxR genes that regulate ROS generation were reduced in the three RNAi-silenced strains. Interestingly, when compared with the controls, racARM exhibited thicker hyphae and bigger conidia; moreover, the MS produced by racARM were bigger than those of the control and smaller than those of cdc42RM. Thus RacA and Cdc42 appear to share some essential functions in N. rileyi, including hyphal growth, conidiation, MS formation, ROS generation and virulence. Yet RacA appears to play a more pivotal role in the polar growth of N. rileyi.

With great improvements in survival in patients with locally advanced prostate cancer, quality of life (QOL) is becoming an important factor in the selection of treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in health-related QOL in patients with locally advanced prostate cancer after intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) combined with androgen deprivation therapy. Patients were treated with IMRT combined with androgen deprivation. Total dose to the prostate was 68.2 Gy (2.2 Gy per fraction), and patients received 50 mg of oral Casodex once daily and 3.6 mg of subcutaneous Zoladex once every 28 days for 2.5 years. QOL was measured using the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite. The time points were baseline, end of radiotherapy, and 3, 12, 36, 48, and 60 months after radiotherapy. From 2002 to 2007, a total of 87 patients were enrolled. Median follow-up time was 76.8 months. Compared with baseline, all four domain summary scores were decreased to varying degrees. Statistically significant changes in the urinary, bowel, and hormonal domain scores were observed (P < 0.05). The changes in scores for urinary incontinence and dysuria were -13.0 ± 8.3 and -6.12 ± 3.9, respectively (P < 0.05). QOL was decreased in patients with locally advanced prostate cancer after IMRT combined with androgen deprivation therapy in all four primary domains, especially in urinary, bowel, and hormonal domains. Nevertheless, the treatment was well tolerated in most patients during the 5 years of follow-up.

S-allylmercaptocysteine (SAMC) is an active compound that is derived from garlic and has been demonstrated to possess antitumor properties in vitro. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of SAMC and determine the underlying mechanism of this effect on human colorectal carcinoma cells. The SW620 cells were cultured with various concentrations of SAMC and cell viability was detected using an MTT assay. Analysis of apoptosis was performed using terminal deoxynucleotidyl-transferase-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate nick end labeling. The c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38 mitogen activated protein kinase (p38) signaling pathways were investigated by polymerase chain reaction. SAMC was observed to reduce cell viability in a dose- and time-dependent manner, partially through the induction of apoptosis in human colorectal carcinoma cells. At the molecular level, SAMC induces apoptosis through JNK and p38 signaling pathways, increasing tumor protein p53 (p53) and Bax activation in the SW620 cells. The most effective concentration of SAMC for the induction of SW620 cell apoptosis was found to be 400 ?M, which was confirmed through cell viability assays and apoptosis analysis. The current study indicated that SAMC inhibits cell proliferation and induces apoptosis of SW620 cells via the JNK and p38 pathways. The results from the current study demonstrated that SAMC must be further investigated as a novel preventive or therapeutic agent for the treatment of colorectal carcinoma, and potentially for use in other tumor types.

The aim of the study was to assess the impact of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) on bone mineral density (BMD) and bone turnover among Chinese middle-aged and elderly men. This cross-sectional study was carried out among 404 Chinese men aged over 45 years. BMD was measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and participants' blood was collected for bone-specific alkaline phosphates (BSAP), SHBG and testosterone assay. Osteoporotic men had lower free testosterone (FT) and higher levels of SHBG, and BSAP than the osteopenia and normal groups. When SHBG levels were divided into quartiles, FT levels decreased and prevalence of osteoporosis increased with higher SHBG levels. Compared with subjects in the lowest quartile of SHBG levels (<36.55 nmol/l), subjects in the third quartile [OR (95 % CI) 2.998 (1.460-6.157), p = 0.002] and the highest quartile [OR (95 % CI) 4.439 (2.192-8.991), p < 0.001] were more likely to suffer with osteoporosis. FT was significantly positive related to total hip BMD and total lumbar BMD, whereas there was no association between TT and BMD after adjusting for age, BMI and FT. SHBG levels were also inversely related to BMD. SHBG could explain 1.4-2.1 % of the BMD variance after adjustment for age, BMI and FT. No association was found between BSAP and SHBG, TT and FT. Logistic regression analysis showed that BMI, smoking and FT or SHBG was independently associated with the presence of osteoporosis. Serum FT levels were positively correlated with BMD, while SHBG levels were inversely related to BMD. Increasing SHBG level was an independent risk factor for osteoporosis among Chinese men.

Although invasive thymoma commonly infiltrates neighbouring mediastinal structures, its extension into the superior vena cava (SVC) and consequent SVC occlusion are rare. In such cases, the urgent removal of the thymoma and radical resection of the infiltrated SVC representreasonable options, since induction therapy is time-consuming and useless for symptom resolution. A case of invasive thymoma extending into the SVC and right atrium (RA) with SVC syndrome is reported. The patient underwent a combined resection of the invasive tumor and SVC under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), and the SVC and bilateral brachiocephalic vein (BCV) were reconstructed with an autologous pericardial 'Y' conduit. After 40 months of follow-up, the patient showed a patent graft and no tumor recurrence.

Benth. has been recognized as a toxic plant that is widely distributed in Southeast Asia and has been used as traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of rheumatoid pain, neuropathic pain, spasticity, skin ulcers and cancers for many years. Gelsemium sempervirens (L.) J.St.-Hil. has been used since the nineteenth century in homeopathy for treating anxiety, neuralgia, migraine and spasmodic disorders, such as asthma and whooping cough in North America. This review aims to provide comprehensive information on the botany, traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacological research and toxicology of medicinal plants in the genus Gelsemium. The overall objective is to explore the evidence supporting its ethnopharmacological effectiveness.

Recent studies have identified a class of small non-coding RNA molecules, named microRNA (miRNA), that is dysregulated in malignant brain glioblastoma. Substantial data have indicated that miRNA-16 (miR-16) plays a significant role in tumors of various origins. This miRNA has been linked to various aspects of carcinogenesis, including cell apoptosis and migration. However, the molecular functions of miR-16 in gliomagenesis are largely unknown. We have shown that the expression of miR-16 in human brain glioma tissues was lower than in non-cancerous brain tissues, and that the expression of miR-16 decreased with increasing degrees of malignancy. Our data suggest that the expression of miR-16 and nuclear factor (NF)-?B1 was negatively correlated with glioma levels. MicroRNA-16 decreased glioma malignancy by downregulating NF-?B1 and MMP9, and led to suppressed invasiveness of human glioma cell lines SHG44, U87, and U373. Our results also indicated that upregulation of miR-16 promoted apoptosis by suppressing BCL2 expression. Finally, the upregulation of miR-16 in a nude mice model of human glioma resulted in significant suppression of glioma growth and invasiveness. Taken together, our experiments have validated the important role of miR-16 as a tumor suppressor gene in glioma growth and invasiveness, and revealed a novel mechanism of miR-16-mediated regulation in glioma growth and invasiveness through inhibition of BCL2 and the NF-?B1/MMP-9 signaling pathway. Therefore, our experiments suggest the possible future use of miR-16 as a therapeutic target in gliomas.

Hybrid carbon nanostructures have attracted enormous interest due to their structural stability and unique physical properties. Geometric and physical properties of a carbon nanotube (CNT)-graphene nanoribbon (GNR) hybrid system were investigated via first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The nanotube-graphene junction (NTGJ), where the GNR directly links to the CNT by covalent bonds, shows novel electronic dependence on the structural parameters of the building-blocks, such as chirality, nanotube diameter and width of the nanoribbon. For an armchair NTGJ, a small band gap opens up representing asymmetrical spin-up and spin-down bands. However, zig-zag NTGJ shows direct semi-conducting characteristics with a tunable band gap ranging from zero to 0.6 eV. Interestingly, the value of the band gap follows the specific width and diameter dependent oscillations, namely the 3p - 1 principle. Transition-state results reveal the formation of NTGJs is exothermic and has a low energy-barrier. In addition, nanotube-graphene-nanotube junctions or namely dumbbell NTGJs were also studied, which exhibits similar properties with single NTGJ.

In the present study, a novel hydrogel-grafted fabrics embedding of berberine nanosuspension was developed for the treatment of infected wound. Hydrogel-grafted fabric was prepared by graft copolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide and alginate using ceric ammonium nitrate as initiator. Berberine nanosuspension was prepared and embedded in the hydrogel-grafted fabrics to achieve sustained drug release. The prepared hydrogel-grafted fabrics embedding of berberine nanosuspension was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and swelling degree studies. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that berberine was embedded into the matrix of hydrogel-grafted fabrics, rather than on the surface. Scanning electron microscopy showed that a thin hydrogel layer was formed on the surface of nonwoven fibers. The swelling study showed that hydrogel-grafted fabric had water absorbing characteristic with reversible temperature sensitivity. The drug release study demonstrated that hydrogel-grafted fabrics can be used as a sustained drug delivery system of hydrophobic compounds. The berberine nanosuspension embedded hydrogel-grafted fabric was further investigated in an animal infected wound model and was found to be a very promising wound healing dressing for the treatment and healing of infected wounds.

B-cell activating factor (BAFF) is involved in not only the physiology of normal B cells, but also the pathophysiology of aggressive B cells related to malignant and autoimmune diseases. However, how excessive BAFF promotes aggressive B-cell proliferation and survival is not well understood. Here we show that excessive human soluble BAFF (hsBAFF) enhanced cell proliferation and survival in normal and B-lymphoid (Raji) cells, which was associated with suppression of PP2A, resulting in activation of Erk1/2. This is supported by the findings that pretreatment with U0126 or PD98059, expression of dominant negative MKK1, or overexpression of PP2A prevented hsBAFF-induced activation of Erk1/2 and cell proliferation/viability in the cells. It appears that hsBAFF-mediated PP2A-Erk1/2 pathway and B-cell proliferation/viability was Ca(2+)-dependent, as pretreatment with BAPTA/AM, EGTA or 2-APB significantly attenuated these events. Furthermore, we found that inhibiting CaMKII with KN93 or silencing CaMKII also attenuated hsBAFF-mediated PP2A-Erk1/2 signaling and B-cell proliferation/viability. The results indicate that BAFF activates Erk1/2, in part through Ca(2+)-CaMKII-dependent inhibition of PP2A, increasing cell proliferation/viability in normal and neoplastic B-lymphoid cells. Our data suggest that inhibitors of CaMKII and Erk1/2, activator of PP2A or manipulation of intracellular Ca(2+) may be exploited for prevention of excessive BAFF-induced aggressive B-cell malignancies and autoimmune diseases.

When deprived of a combined-nitrogen source in the growth medium, the filamentous cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120 (Anabaena) can form heterocysts capable of nitrogen fixation. The process of heterocyst differentiation takes about 20 to 24 h, during which extensive metabolic and morphological changes take place. Guanosine tetraphosphate (ppGpp) is the signal of the stringent response that ensures cell survival by adjusting major cellular activities in response to nutrient starvation in bacteria, and ppGpp accumulates at the early stage of heterocyst differentiation (J. Akinyanju, R. J. Smith, FEBS Lett. 107:173-176, 1979; J Akinyanju, R. J. Smith, New Phytol. 105:117-122, 1987). Here we show that all1549 (here designated relana) in Anabaena, homologous to relA/spoT, is upregulated in response to nitrogen deprivation and predominantly localized in vegetative cells. The disruption of relana strongly affects the synthesis of ppGpp, and the resulting mutant, all1549?sp/sm, fails to form heterocysts and to grow in the absence of a combined-nitrogen source. This phenotype can be complemented by a wild-type copy of relana. Although the upregulation of hetR is affected in the mutant, ectopic overexpression of hetR cannot rescue the phenotype. However, we found that the mutant rapidly loses its viability, within a time window of 3 to 6 h, following the deprivation of combined nitrogen. We propose that ppGpp plays a major role in rebalancing the metabolic activities of the cells in the absence of the nitrogen source supply and that this regulation is necessary for filament survival and consequently for the success of heterocyst differentiation.

With the rapid urbanization, city plays a more and more significant role in the carbon cycle of urban ecosystem. The contribution of household food carbon consumption to urban carbon cycle has become increasingly important, and has been the hot issues of the urban carbon cycle study. We analyzed the dynamics of the food carbon consumption in Xiamen City from 1988 to 2010, evaluated and forecasted the trends of food carbon consumption and its environmental load. The results showed that, from 1988 to 2010, per capita food consumption and per capita food carbon consumption declined by 6% and 25%, respectively. However, due to the rapid growth of population, the total food consumption and total food carbon consumption increased by 116% and 70%, respectively. The rising of total food carbon consumption led to the increasing environmental load of food carbon. The environmental load of food carbon increased from 98 800 t to 166 200 t, particularly there is a dramatic increase of carbon input into soil in recent years. From 2011 to 2024, total food carbon consumption and environmental load will continue to rise and then decline in 2025. Per capita food carbon consumption will decline continuously from 2011. The analysis of household food consumption showed that per household food carbon consumption was affected by household income, food cost and household persons. High food carbon consumption household usually had in average three persons eating at home, spent in average 3 125 yuan x month(-1) on food, the per household food carbon consumption was 1 134.91 kg,and the per capita food carbon consumption was 378.30 kg. Per capita food carbon consumption of high-consumption family was 4.84 times higher than that of low-consumption family.

The plastidic caseinolytic protease (Clp) of higher plants is an evolutionarily conserved protein degradation apparatus composed of a proteolytic core complex (the P and R rings) and a set of accessory proteins (ClpT, ClpC, and ClpS). The role and molecular composition of Clps in higher plants has just begun to be unraveled, mostly from studies with the model dicotyledonous plant Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). In this work, we isolated a virescent yellow leaf (vyl) mutant in rice (Oryza sativa), which produces chlorotic leaves throughout the entire growth period. The young chlorotic leaves turn green in later developmental stages, accompanied by alterations in chlorophyll accumulation, chloroplast ultrastructure, and the expression of chloroplast development- and photosynthesis-related genes. Positional cloning revealed that the VYL gene encodes a protein homologous to the Arabidopsis ClpP6 subunit and that it is targeted to the chloroplast. VYL expression is constitutive in most tissues examined but most abundant in leaf sections containing chloroplasts in early stages of development. The mutation in vyl causes premature termination of the predicted gene product and loss of the conserved catalytic triad (serine-histidine-aspartate) and the polypeptide-binding site of VYL. Using a tandem affinity purification approach and mass spectrometry analysis, we identified OsClpP4 as a VYL-associated protein in vivo. In addition, yeast two-hybrid assays demonstrated that VYL directly interacts with OsClpP3 and OsClpP4. Furthermore, we found that OsClpP3 directly interacts with OsClpT, that OsClpP4 directly interacts with OsClpP5 and OsClpT, and that both OsClpP4 and OsClpT can homodimerize. Together, our data provide new insights into the function, assembly, and regulation of Clps in higher plants.

Oral topotecan (Hycamtin(®)) has been recently approved for the treatment of relapsed small cell lung cancer (SCLC) in 2007, however, the bioavailability and pharmacokinetic data of topotecan for Chinese patients is still limited. Xinze(®) is a new and the only capsule formulation of topotecan used in China that is similar to Hycamtin(®). The current study aimed to investigate the absolute bioavailability and pharmacokinetics of Xinze(®) in Chinese patients with advanced cancers. On day 1, an IV dose of 1.5 mg/m(2)/d as a 30 min continuous infusion was administered. Patients took the oral topotecan at one of two dose levels: 1.5 mg/m(2)/d (six patients) or 1.9 mg/m(2)/d (seven patients) on day 2. Plasma pharmacokinetics of total topotecan and topotecan in the lactone form were performed on both days using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) identified in exon 5 (421C>A) and in exon 2 (34G>A) in ATP-binding cassette sub-family G member 2 (ABCG2) were analyzed by direct sequencing. Safety assessments were performed throughout the study. The maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) reached at 1-2 h and the elimination half-life time (T1/2) was approximately 4.2 h after oral administration. The absolute bioavailability of total topotecan in the 1.5 mg/m(2)/d and 1.9 mg/m(2)/d groups averaged 41.23 ± 11.8% and 36.00 ± 14.8%, respectively. The patients with heterozygous SNPs had essentially the same bioavailability and pharmacokinetics. The bioavailability of topotecan after oral administration illustrates good systemic exposure at dosages of 1.5 mg/m(2)/d and 1.9 mg/m(2)/d over a five-day schedule in Chinese patients. On a dose-normalized basis, the values of Cmax and AUC0-t for total topotecan in Chinese patients were higher than in Caucasians following oral and intravenous administration, while the T1/2 was consistent.

The physical and chemical mechanisms of small molecules with pharmacological activity forming nano-structures are developing into a new field of nano-medicine. By using ROESY 2D NMR spectroscopy, trandem mass spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and computer-assisted molecular modeling, this paper demonstrated the contribution of the folded conformation, the intra- and intermolecular ?-? stacking, the intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonds, and the receptor binding free energy of 6-dimethylaminonaph-2-yl-{N-S-[1-benzylcarba-moyl-4-(2-chloroacetamidobutyl)]-carboxamide (YW3-56) to the rapid formation of nano-rings and the slow formation of nano-capsules. Thus we have developed a strategy that makes it possible to elucidate the physical and chemical mechanisms of bioactive small molecules forming nano-structures.

Peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) carries a poor prognosis with conventional treatment. We retrospectively analyzed data from 45 patients with PTCL who received high-dose therapy and autologous stem cell transplantation (HDT/ASCT) from 1990 to 2008 in our center. Eighteen patients underwent HDT/ASCT in complete remission to induction chemotherapy (CR1), and 27 patients underwent HDT/ASCT in other disease statuses. The median follow-up was 113.5 months (range 52.6-261.0) for surviving patients. The 5-year overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were 64 and 60 %, respectively. The 5-year OS for patients in CR1 and in other disease statuses was 89 and 47 %, respectively (P = 0.002), and 5-year PFS was 83 and 43 % (P = 0.007). In the subgroup excluding anaplastic large cell lymphoma, patients transplanted in CR1 also had significantly better 5-year OS (82 vs. 37 %, P = 0.009) and PFS (82 vs. 33 %, P = 0.008) than those transplanted in other disease statuses. Multivariate analysis showed that CR1 status was the only significant prognostic factor for OS (P = 0.040) and PFS (P = 0.040). These results support the use of HDT/ASCT consolidation in CR1 for PTCL patients. Prospective randomized trials are necessary to confirm the efficacy of this approach.

By using space series to replace time series, this paper studied the relationships between the vegetation characteristics and soil properties at different restoration stages on the slope land with purple soils in Hengyang of Hunnan Province South-central China. There existed obvious differences in the soil physical and chemical properties at different restoration stages. From grassplot, grass-shrub, shrub to shrub-arbor, the soil organic matter, total and available N, and moisture contents increased markedly, soil bulk density had an obvious decrease, soil total and available P contents changed little, and soil pH decreased gradually, but no significant differences were observed among different restoration stages. At different restoration stages, the biomass of plant community had effects on the quantity and composition of soil microbes. The quantities of soil bacteria and fungi had significant positive correlations with the aboveground biomass of plant community, but the quantity of soil actinomycetes had less correlation with plant communitys aboveground biomass. At different restoration stages, the activities of soil urease, protease, alkaline phosphatase, invertase, cellulase, catalase, and polyphenol oxidase decreased with increasing soil layer, and had significant positive correlations with plant communitys richness and aboveground biomass.

Ischemia reperfusion injury is partly responsible for the high mortality associated with induced myocardial injury and the reduction in the full benefit of myocardial reperfusion. Remote ischemic preconditioning, perconditioning, and postconditioning have all been shown to be cardioprotective. However, it is still unknown which one is the most beneficial. To examine this issue, we used adult male Wistar rat ischemia reperfusion models to compare the cardioprotective effect of these three approaches applied on double-sided hind limbs.

B-cell activating factor of the TNF family (BAFF, also called BLyS, TALL-1, THANK, or zTNF4) has revealed its critical function in B lymphocyte proliferation and survival, as well as the pathogenesis of autoimmune disease. However, the molecular mechanisms of excess BAFF-extended aggressive B lymphocytes have not been completely defined. Here we show that excessive hsBAFF-elevated [Ca(2+)]i activated mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway, leading to proliferation and survival in B lymphocytes. This is supported by the findings that intracellular Ca(2+) chelator (BAPTA/AM) or mTOR inhibitor (rapamycin) abolished the events. Sequentially, we observed that preventing [Ca(2+)]i elevation using EGTA or 2-APB dramatically inhibited hsBAFF activation of mTOR signaling, as well as cell growth and survival, suggesting that hsBAFF-induced extracellular Ca(2+) influx and ER Ca(2+) release elevates [Ca(2+)]i contributing to B lymphocyte proliferation and survival via activation of mTOR signaling. Further, we noticed that pretreatment with BAPTA/AM, EGTA or 2-APB blocked hsBAFF-increased phosphorylation of calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII), and inhibiting CaMKII with KN93 attenuated hsBAFF-activated mTOR signaling, as well as cell growth and survival, revealing that the effects of hsBAFF-elevated [Ca(2+)]i on mTOR signaling as well as proliferation and survival in B lymphocytes is through stimulating phosphorylation of CaMKII. The results indicate that hsBAFF activates mTOR pathway triggering B lymphocyte proliferation and survival by calcium signaling. Our findings suggest that manipulation of intracellular Ca(2+) level or CaMKII and mTOR activity may be exploited for the prevention of excessive BAFF-induced aggressive B lymphocyte disorders and autoimmune diseases.

Bioinformatics is challenged by the fact that traditional analysis tools have difficulty in processing large-scale data from high-throughput sequencing. The open source Apache Hadoop project, which adopts the MapReduce framework and a distributed file system, has recently given bioinformatics researchers an opportunity to achieve scalable, efficient and reliable computing performance on Linux clusters and on cloud computing services. In this article, we present MapReduce frame-based applications that can be employed in the next-generation sequencing and other biological domains. In addition, we discuss the challenges faced by this field as well as the future works on parallel computing in bioinformatics.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been successfully used for the treatment of experimental intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). However, the neuroprotective mechanisms through which MSCs improve neurological functional recovery are not fully understood. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that treatment with MSCs inhibits inflammation after ICH and reduces subsequent brain injury. Adult rats subjected to stereotaxic injection of collagenase VII were transplanted with a subpopulation of human bone marrow-derived MSCs (hBMSCs), termed fetal liver kinase (Flk)-1(+) hBMSCs, or saline into the ipsilateral brain parenchyma 1 day after ICH. Significant recovery of behavior was noted in the Flk-1(+) hBMSC-treated rats beginning 3 days after ICH compared with the control group. Brain water content was significantly decreased in the ipsilateral hemispheres of the Flk-1(+) hBMSC-treated rats when compared with the controls 3 days after ICH. The relative hemorrhage volume was reduced 55 days after Flk-1(+) hBMSC treatment. However, this change was not statistically significant. Flk-1(+) hBMSCs significantly inhibited the proliferation of rat peripheral blood mononuclear cells (rPBMCs) induced in a mixed lymphocyte reaction. Consistently, we found a significant anti-inflammatory effect of Flk-1(+) hBMSCs on the ICH brain, including a decrease in neutrophil infiltration and microglial activation in the peri-ICH area, and downregulation of inflammatory mediators, such as interleukin (IL)-1?, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-?. In addition, Flk-1+ hBMSC treatment significantly increased vascular density in the peri-ICH area, and transplanted Flk-1(+) hBMSCs were found to be incorporated into the cerebral vasculature 55 days after transplantation. Overall, these data suggest an essential role for Flk-1(+) hBMSCs in reducing inflammatory infiltration, promoting angiogenesis, and improving functional recovery after ICH in rats.

China is assumed one of the largest contributors to the worlds total mercury (Hg) emissions, with a rapid increase in anthropogenic Hg emissions. However, little is known about Hg fate and transport in urban areas of China. In this study, total Hg contents in surface (0-5 cm) sediments from lakes in 14 parks (3 in the central urban core (CUC) area, 5 in the developed urban (DDU) area, 2 in the developing urban (DIU) area, and 4 in the suburban (SU) area) and (210)Pb-dated sediment cores from lakes in 5 parks (3 in the CUC and 2 in the DDU) in Shanghai were assessed to compare current patterns (urbanization effect) with the historical records of Hg emissions over the past century. Total Hg content in surface sediments showed a clear urbanization pattern. Dated sediment cores revealed a 2-3 fold increase in total Hg content, while Hg fluxes exponentially increased from ~1900 to present and accelerated since 1990 when Chinas economy and urbanization booms started. Anthropogenic Hg fluxes in post-2000 ranged from 253 to 1452 ?g m(-2) yr(-1), 2-7 times greater than preindustrial (pre-1900) Hg fluxes. Total Hg and Pb contents in both surface sediments and sediment cores were highly correlated and Hg flux in sediment cores also significantly correlated with annual coal consumption in the period 1949-2008. The significant correlations suggest that coal combustion is a major source of Hg emission in Shanghai.

Xinze(®) is a new capsule formulation of topotecan being made in China which is similar to Hycamtin(®), the currently available oral formulation approved in 2007 for the treatment of relapsed small cell lung cancer (SCLC). As topotecan bioavailability and pharmacokinetic data for Chinese patients is limited, the aim of the study was to assess the absolute bioavailability and pharmacokinetics of Xinze(®) in Chinese patients with SCLC treated intravenously (i.v.) with 1.5mg/m(2)/d topotecan (Hycamtin(®)) on day 1 and treated orally with 1.5mg/m(2)/d topotecan on day 2. An ultra high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) method was developed and validated for the determination of total topotecan (lactone and carboxylate forms) and of topotecan in the lactone form in human plasma samples. The method was validated with respect to selectivity, extraction recovery, matrix effect, linearity, intra- and inter-day precision, accuracy, and stability. The quantification limits were 0.5ng/mL for total topotecan and 0.1ng/mL for topotecan in the lactone form. The mean absolute bioavailability of total topotecan and topotecan in the lactone form was 42.24±12.9% and 47.18±16.9%, respectively, values which illustrate good systemic exposure. The presented results demonstrated this method can be a sensitive and efficient tool for bioavailability studies of topotecan.

Understory vegetation plays a crucial role in carbon and nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems; however, it is not clear how understory species affect tree litter decomposition and nutrient dynamics. In this study, we examined the impacts of understory litter on the decomposition and nutrient release of tree litter both in a pine (Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica) and a poplar (Populus × xiaozhuanica) plantation in Northeast China. Leaf litter of tree species, and senesced aboveground materials from two dominant understory species, Artemisia scoparia and Setaria viridis in the pine stand and Elymus villifer and A. sieversiana in the poplar stand, were collected. Mass loss and N and P fluxes of single-species litter and three-species mixtures in each of the two forests were quantified. Data from single-species litterbags were used to generate predicted mass loss and N and P fluxes for the mixed-species litterbags. In the mixture from the pine stand, the observed mass loss and N release did not differ from the predicted value, whereas the observed P release was greater than the predicted value. However, the presence of understory litter decelerated the mass loss and did not affect N and P releases from the pine litter. In the poplar stand, litter mixture presented a positive non-additive effect on litter mass loss and P release, but an addition effect on N release. The presence of understory species accelerated only N release of poplar litter. Moreover, the responses of mass loss and N and P releases of understory litter in the mixtures varied with species in both pine and poplar plantations. Our results suggest that the effects of understory species on tree litter decomposition vary with tree species, and also highlight the importance of understory species in litter decomposition and nutrient cycles in forest ecosystems.

This study aimed to investigate the functional restoration of radiation-damaged salivary gland with human amniotic epithelial cells (hAECs) transplantation by intra-glandular injection. hAECs were isolated from the amnion tissues. After primary culture, the phenotype of hAECs of the second passage was identified by flow cytometry (FCM) and immunocytochemical staining. Then, hAECs were intra-glandularly injected into the irradiated glands of mice. At different time points after transplantation, the glands were collected for hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining and immunofluorescence staining, and the saliva flow rate was also determined. Results showed these cells were positive for CD29, CD73 and CK19 and negative for CD44, CD34, CD45 and CD71. The transplanted hAECs in the recipient glands could differentiate into acinar-like cells and resulted in morphological and functional restoration of salivary gland.

Tube and Pelle are essential components in Drosophila Toll signaling pathway. In this study, we characterized a pair of crustacean homologs of Tube and Pelle in Scylla paramamosain, namely, SpTube and SpPelle, and analyzed their immune functions. The full-length cDNA of SpTube had 2052 bp with a 1578 bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding a protein with 525 aa. A death domain (DD) and a kinase domain were predicted in the deduced protein. The full-length cDNA of SpPelle had 3825 bp with a 3420 bp ORF encoding a protein with 1140 aa. The protein contained a DD and a kinase domain. Two conserved repeat motifs previously called Tube repeat motifs present only in insect Tube or Tube-like sequences were found between these two domains. Alignments and structure predictions demonstrated that SpTubeDD and SpPelleDD significantly differed in sequence and 3D structure. Similar to TubeDD, SpTubeDD contained three common conserved residues (R, K, and R) on one surface that may mediate SpMyD88 binding and two common residues (A and A) on the other surface that may contribute to Pelle binding. By contrast, SpPelleDD lacked similar conservative residues. SpTube, insect Tube-like kinases, and human IRAK4 were found to be RD kinases with an RD dipeptide in the kinase domain. SpPelle, Pelle, insect Pelle-like kinases, and human IRAK1 were found to be non-RD kinases lacking an RD dipeptide. Both SpTube and SpPelle were highly expressed in hemocytes, gills, and hepatopancreas. Upon challenge, SpTube and SpPele were significantly increased in hemocytes by Gram-negative or Gram-positive bacteria, whereas only SpPelle was elevated by White Spot Syndrome Virus. The pull-down assay showed that SpTube can bind to both SpMyD88 and SpPelle. These results suggest that SpTube, SpPelle, and SpMyD88 may form a trimeric complex involved in the immunity of mud crabs against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria.

Seizure is a common presenting manifestation and plays an important role in the clinical presentation and quality of life for patients with low-grade gliomas (LGGs). The authors set out to identify factors that influence preoperative seizure characteristics and postoperative seizure control. Cases involving adult patients who had undergone initial surgery for LGGs in a single institution between 2005 and 2009 were retrospectively reviewed. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify factors associated with preoperative seizures and postoperative seizure control. Of the 508 patients in the series, 350 (68.9%) presented with seizures. Age less than 38 years and cortical involvement of tumor were more likely to be associated with seizures (P = .003 and .001, respectively, multivariate logistic analysis). For the cohort of 350 patients with seizures, Engel classification was used to evaluate 6- and 12-month outcome after surgery: completely seizure free (Engel class I), 65.3% and 62.5%; not seizure free (Engel classes II, III, IV), 34.7% and 37.5%. After multivariate logistic analysis, favorable seizure prognosis was more common in patients with secondary generalized seizure (P = .006) and with calcification on MRI (.031). With respect to treatment-related variables, patients achieved much better seizure control after gross total resection than after subtotal resection (P < .0001). Ki67 was an independent molecular marker predicting poor seizure control in the patients with a history of seizure if overexpressed but was not a predictor for those without preoperative seizures. These factors may provide insight into developing effective treatment strategies aimed at prolonging patients survival.

In some cases the language used in the PubMed abstracts makes matching that content to a JoVE video difficult. In other cases, there happens not to be any content in our video library that is relevant to the topic of a given abstract. In these cases, our algorithms are trying their best to display videos with relevant content, which can sometimes result in matched videos with only a slight relation.
