E-cigarettes: online survey of UK smoking cessation practitioners.

Hide Abstract
Use of e-cigarettes (inhalable vapour producing battery powered devices that aim to simulate tobacco cigarettes), is rising in a number of countries, but as yet none of these products are regulated as medicinal devices or available as smoking cessation treatments. Smokers seeking support from health professionals to stop smoking are interested in e-cigarettes and may be buying them to aid a quit attempt. Determining what smokers are asking, and what health professionals think about these products may have implications for smoking treatment services in a number of countries.

Tobacco displays at the point of sale (PoS) are an important means for the tobacco industry to communicate with consumers. With regulations prohibiting PoS displays recently having come into force in Ireland, passed into law in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and some Australian states, and being considered in New Zealand, Finland and Brazil, this is an increasingly important issue. This study explores the nature of displays, the extent to which they are tobacco industry funded, and the relation between the tobacco companies and retailers.

Evaluation of: Pell JP, Haw S, Cobbe S et al. Smoke-free legislation and hospitalizations for acute coronary syndrome. N. Engl. J. Med. 359, 482-491 (2008). A study is published in one of the worlds most reputable medical journals and is rated a "must read" by the prestigious Faculty of 1000 [101] , yet described in the BBC News Magazine--even before it is published--as looking like "over-hasty, over confident research" [102] and ranked among "the worst junk stats" of the year by a Pro Vice Chancellor of Oxford University. Amid scenes reminiscent of the AIDS conferences of the 1980s, researchers on their way to hear the initial presentation were forced to cross a line of angry pickets waving "Junk Science" placards. The issue is controversial enough to provoke the First World Congress on Smoking Bans and Lies in January 2009, and it is precisely the rapidly growing weight of evidence, rather than the lack of it, that has made it a battleground in an emerging clash between the public health community and those who deny that secondhand smoke kills.

What is Visualize?

JoVE Visualize is a tool created to match the last 5 years of PubMed publications to methods in JoVE's video library.

How does it work?

We use abstracts found on PubMed and match them to JoVE videos to create a list of 10 to 30 related methods videos.

Video X seems to be unrelated to Abstract Y...

In developing our video relationships, we compare around 5 million PubMed articles to our library of over 4,500 methods videos. In some cases the language used in the PubMed abstracts makes matching that content to a JoVE video difficult. In other cases, there happens not to be any content in our video library that is relevant to the topic of a given abstract. In these cases, our algorithms are trying their best to display videos with relevant content, which can sometimes result in matched videos with only a slight relation.
