Heart failure (HF) is a common disease with complex pathophysiological causes. The diagnosis of HF commonly relies on comprehensive analyses of medical history and symptoms, and results from echocardiography and biochemical tests. Galectin-3, a relatively new biomarker in HF, was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2010 as a marker in the stratification of risk for HF. We assessed galectin-3 as a biomarker for HF diagnosis in patients with preserved ejection fraction (pEF) and compared its performance with that of B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP).

For standard algorithm of atmospheric correction of water, the ratio of two near-infrared (NIR) channels is selected to determine an aerosol model, and then aerosol radiation at every wavelength is accordingly estimated by extrapolation. The uncertainty of radiation measurement in NIR bands will play important part in the accuracy of water-leaving reflectance. In the present research, erroneous expressions were derived mathematically in order to see the error propagation from NIR bands. The errors distribution of water-leaving reflectance was thoroughly studied. The results show that the bigger the errors of measurement are made, the bigger the errors of water-leaving reflectance are retrieved, with sometimes the NIR band errors canceling out. Moreover, the higher the values of aerosol optical depth or the more the component of small particles in aerosol, the bigger the errors that appear during retrieval.

TiO2 compact layers (CLs) prepared by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) from an aqueous nanoparticle suspension were used in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) to prevent charge recombination at the interface between the transparent fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate and the electrolyte. The TiO2 nanopowder (ca. 4.5 nm diameter) suspension used in the EPD process was prepared via a continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis pilot plant (at a production rate of ca. 0.38 kg h(-1)). The optimal thickness of the TiO2 CL for DSSCs is about 115 nm. Compared to the DSSCs without a CL, the optimal cell has shown improved short-circuit current density (JSC) and solar energy conversion efficiency by 13.1% and 15.0%, respectively. The mechanism for improved performance has been studied by the measurements of dark current and electrochemical impedance spectra. The interfacial charge transfer resistance at the FTO/electrolyte interface is increased after fabricating a CL in the cell, indicating inhibited electron recombination at the interface.

The transcription factor NF-?B plays a pivotal role in innate immunity in response to a variety of stimuli, and the coordinated regulation of this pathway determines the proper host responses to extracellular signals. In this study, we identified RACK1 as a novel negative regulator of NF-?B signaling, NF-?B-mediated cytokine induction and inflammatory reactions. RACK1 physically associates with the IKK complex in a TNF-triggered manner. This interaction interferes with the recruitment of the IKK complex to TRAF2, which is a critical step for IKK phosphorylation and subsequent activation triggered by TNF. By modulating the interaction between TRAF2 and IKK, RACK1 regulates the levels of NF-?B activation in response to different intensities of stimuli. Our findings suggest that RACK1 plays an important role in controlling the sensitivity of TNF-triggered NF-?B signaling by regulating IKK activation and provide new insight into the negative regulation of inflammatory reactions.Cell Research advance online publication 10 December 2013; doi:10.1038/cr.2013.162.

The pathogenesis of chronic schistosomiasis is caused by irritation of the schistosome eggs trapped in liver that induce delayed hypersensitive reactions from the surrounding tissues, leading to the formation of inflammatory granuloma and subsequent fibrosis. A Schistosoma japonicum (S. japonicum) single-chain fragment variable (SjscFv) which specifically binds to the S. japonicum soluble immature egg antigen (SIEA) can be used as a target to deliver specific cytokine towards the site of hepatic fibrosis. To test this hypothesis, a novel recombinant plasmid, pVAX1/SjscFv-IL18, was constructed by fusing SjscFv to IL-18 gene with a 45bp glycine-rich linker. Furthermore, experiments on mice showed that pVAX1/SjscFv-IL18 could effectively express IL-18 in the liver and in serum. Hepatic contents of IL-2 and IFN-? (Th1-type) in S. japonicum-infected mice vaccinated with pVAX1/SjscFv-IL18 increased significantly but those of their IL-4 and IL-10 (Th2-type) decreased as compared to the analyzed results of 4 cytokines in the liver cells of control mice vccinated with pVAX1/IL18. Consistent with the levels of Th1 and Th2 cytokines, mice vaccinated with pVAX1/SjscFv-IL18 developed much less hepatic fibrosis 20weeks after infection, which was evaluated by average volumn of granuloma and collagen contents. These data suggested that the linkage of IL-18 to the target-specific SjscFv molecule appears to be a potentially promising trial route of therapy, the hepatic fibrosis in S. japonicum-infected mice may be ameliorated through effective expression of IL18 in liver.

The prevalence of Perkinsus sp. infection in Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum was investigated in the coastal areas of east China. Thirteen groups of clams were collected from 5 sites: Dandong and Qingdao Bays (Yellow Sea), Weifang Bay (Bohai Sea), and Ningbo and Fuzhou Bays (East China Sea). The clams were tested for perkinsosis infection using Rays fluid thioglycollate medium culture assay. Perkinsus sp. was found in samples from all 5 sites from May 2008 to May 2009. Infection prevalence ranged from 43.75 to 95.83%, and was significantly higher in October than in May. The only 3 uninfected groups of clams were collected from Weifang Bay, the site farthest from the ocean. There was no difference in the prevalence of infection among the remaining 4 sites. The conserved internal transcribed spacer regions of the ribosomal RNA gene complex in each of the Perkinsus sp. isolates were amplified by PCR. The resulting amplicons were sequenced and phylogenetically analyzed. All the Perkinsus isolates were identified as Perkinsus olseni.

A major reduction of genetic diversity in mtDNA occurred during the domestication of East Asian pigs. However, the extent to which genetic diversity has been lost in the nuclear genome is uncertain. To reveal levels and patterns of nucleotide diversity and to elucidate the genetic relationships and demographic history of domestic pigs and their ancestors, wild boars, we investigated 14 nuclear markers (including 8 functional genes, 2 pseudogenes and 4 intergenic regions) from 11 different chromosomes in East Asia-wide samples and pooled them with previously obtained mtDNA data for a combined analysis.

In the summer 2008, Enteromorpha Prolifra broke out in Yellow Sea and East Sea on a large scale for the first time, and became a marine disaster. The authors constructed a stereoscopic monitoring system which monitored the disaster continuously, dynamically and in real time. The present paper introduced the construction of the stereoscopic monitoring system; through analyzing the spectral characteristics of Enteromorpha Prolifra and ocean water which were acquired in a field experiment, confirmed Enteromorpha Prolifra retrieval models based on multi-platform multi-sensor and multi-spectral remote sensing data, contrasted the different scale monitoring results, and analyzed the evolvement rules with time-series analysis. This system was applied to the Enteromorpha Prolifra emergency monitoring in the 29th Olympic sailing area. It was proved feasible and valuable for the Olympic safeguard.

Early land plant mitochondrial genomes captured important changes of mitochondrial genome evolution when plants colonized land. The chondromes of seed plants show several derived characteristics, e.g., large genome size variation, rapid intra-genomic rearrangement, abundant introns, and highly variable levels of RNA editing. On the other hand, the chondromes of charophytic algae are still largely ancestral in these aspects, resembling those of early eukaryotes. When the transition happened has been a long-standing question in studies of mitochondrial genome evolution. Here we report complete mitochondrial genome sequences from an early-diverging liverwort, Treubia lacunosa, and a late-evolving moss, Anomodon rugelii. The two genomes, 151,983 and 104,239 base pairs in size respectively, contain standard sets of protein coding genes for respiration and protein synthesis, as well as nearly full sets of rRNA and tRNA genes found in the chondromes of the liverworts Marchantia polymorpha and Pleurozia purpurea and the moss Physcomitrella patens. The gene orders of these two chondromes are identical to those of the other liverworts and moss. Their intron contents, with all cis-spliced group I or group II introns, are also similar to those in the previously sequenced liverwort and moss chondromes. These five chondromes plus the two from the hornworts Phaeoceros laevis and Megaceros aenigmaticus for the first time allowed comprehensive comparative analyses of structure and organization of mitochondrial genomes both within and across the three major lineages of bryophytes. These analyses led to the conclusion that the mitochondrial genome experienced dynamic evolution in genome size, gene content, intron acquisition, gene order, and RNA editing during the origins of land plants and their major clades. However, evolution of this organellar genome has remained rather conservative since the origin and initial radiation of early land plants, except within vascular plants.

Homeobox genes are the key regulators during development, and they are in general highly conserved with only a few reported cases of rapid evolution. RHOXF2 is an X-linked homeobox gene in primates. It is highly expressed in the testicle and may play an important role in spermatogenesis. As male reproductive system is often the target of natural and/or sexual selection during evolution, in this study, we aim to dissect the pattern of molecular evolution of RHOXF2 in primates and its potential functional consequence.

A novel, water-soluble 20-hydroxylecdysono-20,22-phosphoric acid 2 and its sodium salt 3 were designed and synthesized from 20-hydroxylecdysone 1 in six steps and with 67% overall yield. The synthesized phosphoric acid 2 exhibited hypoglycemic activity >40-fold more potent than that of 20-hydroxylecdysone 1 at concentrations between 2 × 10?? and 2 × 10?? mol/l in a glucose consumption test in HepG2 cells. At a concentration of 2 × 10?? mol/l, phosphoric acid 2 was still active, causing a maximum increase in glucose consumption of more than 500%, while 20-hydroxylecdysone 1 was inactive.

The spectral reflectance and water qualities of 27 stations were acquired in the lake Taihu during the months from May to August, 2008 when blue algal bloomed. Based on the fluorescence characteristics analysis of different chlorophyll a concentration, it was obvious that the position and height of fluorescence peak both have a positive correlation with chlorophyll a concentration, and the correlation coefficients between chlorophyll a concentration and position and half width of fluorescence peak are larger than those of the reference baseline and the normalized height of fluorescence. Estimating of chlorophyll a concentration in case 2 water using fluorescence characteristics is obviously better than the empirical algorithm based on blue to green ratio. Moreover, the common algorithm based on near infrared band to red band ratio is essentially consistent with the normalized height method.

Surgical resection is the first-line treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with well-preserved liver function. Nevertheless, the rate of postoperative recurrence at 5 years is as high as 70%, and this gravely jeopardizes the therapeutic outcome. Clearly, new approaches are needed for preventing the relapse of this deadly disease. Taking advantage of a luciferase-labeled orthotopic xenograft model of HCC, we examined the role of sorafenib, the first systemic drug approved for advanced HCC patients, in the prevention of HCC recurrence. We found that sorafenib suppressed the development of postsurgical intrahepatic recurrence and abdominal metastasis and consequently led to prolonged postoperative survival of mice in this model. Furthermore, hyperactivity of extracellular signal-regulated kinase signaling caused by elevated levels of growth factors associated with postoperative liver regeneration enhanced the sensitivity of HCC cells to sorafenib; this provides a plausible explanation for the observation that recurrent tumors are more responsive to growth inhibition by sorafenib.

Eph receptors, the largest subfamily of transmembrane tyrosine kinase receptors, have been increasingly implicated in various physiologic and pathologic processes, and the roles of the Eph family members during tumorigenesis have recently attracted growing attention. Until now, research on EphB3 function in cancer is limited to focusing on tumor suppression by EphB receptors in colorectal cancer. However, its function in other types of cancer remains poorly investigated. In this study, we explored the function of EphB3 in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We found that the expression of EphB3 was significantly upregulated in clinical samples and cell lines, and the expression level correlated with the patient pathologic characteristics, including tumor size, differentiation, and metastasis. Overexpression of EphB3 in NSCLC cell lines accelerated cell growth and migration and promoted tumorigenicity in xenografts in a kinase-independent manner. In contrast, downregulation of EphB3 inhibited cell proliferation and migration and suppressed in vivo tumor growth and metastasis. Furthermore, we showed that silencing of EphB3 inhibited cell growth by reducing DNA synthesis and caspase-8-mediated apoptosis and suppressed cell migration by increasing accumulation of focal adhesion formation. Taken together, our findings suggest that EphB3 provides critical support to the development and progression of NSCLC by stimulating cell growth, migration, and survival, thereby implicating EphB3 as a potential therapeutic target in NSCLC.

OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence and risk factors for personality disorder (PD) outpatients attending in for psychiatric and psychological counseling in Shanghai. METHODS: 3075 subjects were sampled by systematic sampling method from outpatients in psycho-counseling clinics and psychiatric clinics in Shanghai Mental Health Center. Based on DSM-IV criteria, personality disorders were assessed by both questionnaires (personality diagnostic questionnaire, PDQ-4+) and interviews (structured clinical interview for DSM-IV Axis II, SCID-II). Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the significant independent contributor to PD. RESULTS: 71.3% of the outpatients were found having pathological personality by using questionnaire of self rating PD scale. 982 outpatients (31.9%) met criteria for at least one personality disorder by using structured clinical interview. Younger age (OR = 1.8, 95%CI: 1.5 - 2.1), single or divorced (OR = 1.6, 95%CI: 1.4 - 1.9), psychological counseling outpatients (OR = 1.2, 95%CI: 1.1 - 1.3), mood and outpatients with neurosis disorders (OR = 1.7, 95%CI: 1.4 - 2.0) were more frequently assigned as personality disorders. Data from logistic regression analysis showed that patients of tender age, not nurtured and raised by their parents, with introvert characters were related risk factors of PD. CONCLUSION: High prevalence rate of PD was found in this sample of Chinese outpatients, especially in those psychological counseling outpatients with mood or neurosis disorders. More attention should be paid to the recognition and intervention of PD in outpatients with mental disorders.

Across the streptophyte lineage, which includes charophycean algae and embryophytic plants, there have been at least four independent transitions to the terrestrial habitat. One of these involved the evolution of embryophytes (bryophytes and tracheophytes) from a charophycean ancestor, while others involved the earliest branching lineages, containing the monotypic genera Mesostigma and Chlorokybus, and within the Klebsormidiales and Zygnematales lineages. To overcome heat, water stress, and increased exposure to ultraviolet radiation, which must have accompanied these transitions, adaptive mechanisms would have been required. During periods of dehydration and/or desiccation, proteomes struggle to maintain adequate cytoplasmic solute concentrations. The increased usage of charged amino acids (DEHKR) may be one way of maintaining protein hydration, while increased use of aromatic residues (FHWY) protects proteins and nucleic acids by absorbing damaging UV, with both groups of residues thought to be important for the stabilization of protein structures. To test these hypotheses we examined amino acid sequences of orthologous proteins representing both mitochondrion- and plastid-encoded proteomes across streptophytic lineages. We compared relative differences within categories of amino acid residues and found consistent patterns of amino acid compositional fluxuation in extra-membranous regions that correspond with episodes of terrestrialization: positive change in usage frequency for residues with charged side-chains, and aromatic residues of the light-capturing chloroplast proteomes. We also found a general decrease in the usage frequency of hydrophobic, aliphatic, and small residues. These results suggest that amino acid compositional shifts in extra-membrane regions of plastid and mitochondrial proteins may represent biochemical adaptations that allowed green plants to colonize the land.

The recent advent of robotically assisted surgery has enabled totally endoscopic repair of atrial septal defects and patent foramen ovale. This study investigates the feasibility and safety of totally endoscopic repair of an atrial septal defect through small incisions on the chest without robotic assistance.

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that overexpression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) may favorably affect left ventricular (LV) remodeling and function after myocardial infarction (MI). The left anterior descending coronary artery was ligated to produce anterior MI in 100 Wistar-Kyoto rats that were randomly divided into Ad-ACE2, Ad-ACE2+A779, Ad-EGFP, model, and sham groups. Two weeks later, rats in the Ad-ACE2 and Ad-EGFP groups received direct intramyocardial injection of Ad-ACE2 and Ad-EGFP, respectively. Rats in the Ad-ACE2+A779 group received both intramyocardial injection of Ad-ACE2 and a continuous intravenous infusion of A779 for 15 days. LV volume and systolic function, the extent of myocardial fibrosis, and levels of ACE2, angiotensin II (Ang II), and collagen I protein expression were evaluated. Four weeks after ACE2 gene transfer, the Ad-ACE2 group showed reduced LV volume, extent of myocardial fibrosis, and expression levels of ACE, Ang II, and collagen I in the myocardium, and increased LV ejection fraction and levels of ACE2 activity and expression in comparison with the Ad-EGFP and model groups. These results suggest that ACE2 overexpression attenuated LV fibrosis and improved LV remodeling and systolic function. In conclusion, overexpression of ACE2 favorably affected the pathological process of LV remodeling after MI by inhibiting ACE activity, reducing AngII levels, and up-regulating Ang-(1-7) expression, thus providing a potential therapeutic target in the treatment of heart failure.

In the present paper, the authors compare the fits and unfit of different anesthetic methods for thyroid ablation and try to find a better one for it according to their own clinical practice and other scholars experience. Results indicate that any anesthetic method has its own advantages and disadvantages, while compound acupuncture anesthesia for thyroid surgery is of prominent preponderance not only in the analgesic effect but also in fewer side-effects and less physiological interference. Thus, compound acupuncture anesthesia is a reliable and better anesthetic method for thyroid operation in clinic.

Plants have large and complex mitochondrial genomes in comparison to other eukaryotes. In bryophytes, the mitochondrial genomes exhibit a mixed mode of conservative and dynamic evolution. Here, we sequenced the complete mitochondrial genome from hornwort Phaeoceros laevis, to investigate the level of conservation in mitochondrial genome evolution within hornworts. The circular molecule consists of 209,482 base pairs and represents the largest known mitochondrial genome of bryophytes. It contains 30 protein genes, 3 rRNA genes, and 21 tRNA genes, with 34 cis-spliced group II introns disrupting 16 protein genes. There are 11 pseudogenes in this genome, and nine of them are shared with the other fully sequenced hornwort chondriome from Megaceros aenigmaticus, a distant relative of P. laevis. These pseudogenes were likely formed during an early stage of hornwort evolution. The two hornwort chondriomes differ by four inversions and translocations, seven genes, and four introns in the genome structure and organization. At the sequence level, they are very similar, with the identity values ranging mostly from 80 to 95% in intergenic spacers, introns, and exons. These data indicate that mitochondrial genome evolution in hornworts is less conservative than in liverworts, but has not reached the dynamic level as seen in seed plants.

Plant mitochondrial genomes have been known to be highly unusual in their large sizes, frequent intra-genomic rearrangement, and generally conservative sequence evolution. Recent studies show that in early land plants the mitochondrial genomes exhibit a mixed mode of conservative yet dynamic evolution. Here, we report the completely sequenced mitochondrial genome from the liverwort Pleurozia purpurea. The circular genome has a size of 168,526 base pairs, containing 43 protein-coding genes, 3 rRNA genes, 25 tRNA genes, and 31 group I or II introns. It differs from the Marchantia polymorpha mitochondrial genome, the only other liverwort chondriome that has been sequenced, in lacking two genes (trnRucg and trnTggu) and one intron (rrn18i1065gII). The two genomes have identical gene orders and highly similar sequences in exons, introns, and intergenic spacers. Finally, a comparative analysis of duplicated trnRucu and other trnR genes from the two liverworts and several other organisms identified the recent lateral origin of trnRucg in Marchantia mtDNA through modification of a duplicated trnRucu. This study shows that the mitochondrial genomes evolve extremely slowly in liverworts, the earliest-diverging lineage of extant land plants, in stark contrast to what is known of highly dynamic evolution of mitochondrial genomes in seed plants.

Land plants possess some of the most unusual mitochondrial genomes among eukaryotes. However, in early land plants these genomes resemble those of green and red algae or early eukaryotes. The question of when during land plant evolution the dramatic change in mtDNAs occurred remains unanswered. Here we report the first completely sequenced mitochondrial genome of the hornwort, Megaceros aenigmaticus, a member of the sister group of vascular plants. It is a circular molecule of 184,908 base pairs, with 32 protein genes, 3 rRNA genes, 17 tRNA genes, and 30 group II introns. The genome contains many genes arranged in the same order as in those of a liverwort, a moss, several green and red algae, and Reclinomonas americana, an early-branching eukaryote with the most ancestral form of mtDNA. In particular, the gene order between mtDNAs of the hornwort and Physcomitrella patens (moss) differs by only 8 inversions and translocations. However, the hornwort mtDNA possesses 4 derived features relative to green alga mtDNAs--increased genome size, RNA editing, intron gains, and gene losses--which were all likely acquired during the origin and early evolution of land plants. Overall, this genome and those of other 2 bryophytes show that mitochondrial genomes in early land plants, unlike their seed plant counterparts, exhibit a mixed mode of conservative yet dynamic evolution.

In the title compound, C(3)H(5)N(2) (+)·C(7)H(4)NO(4) (-), the benzene ring forms a dihedral angle of 40.60?(5)° with the imidizolium ring. The nitro-benzoate anion is approximately planar: the benzene ring makes dihedral angles of 3.8?(3) and 3.2?(1)° with the nitro and carboxyl-ate groups, respectively. In the crystal structure, the cations and anions are linked by inter-molecular N-H?O hydrogen bonds, forming a zigzag chain along the b axis.

*The colonization of land by plants fundamentally altered environmental conditions on earth. Plant-mycorrhizal fungus symbiosis likely played a key role in this process by assisting plants to absorb water and nutrients from soil. *Here, in a diverse set of land plants, we investigated the evolutionary histories and functional conservation of three genes required for mycorrhiza formation in legumes and rice (Oryza sativa), DMI1, DMI3 and IPD3. *The genes were isolated from nearly all major plant lineages. Phylogenetic analyses showed that they had been vertically inherited since the origin of land plants. Further, cross-species mutant rescue experiments demonstrated that DMI3 genes from liverworts and hornworts could rescue Medicago truncatula dmi3 mutants for mycorrhiza formation. Yeast two-hybrid assays also showed that bryophyte DMI3 proteins could bind to downstream-acting M. trunculata IPD3 protein. Finally, molecular evolutionary analyses revealed that these genes were under purifying selection for maintenance of their ancestral functions in all mycorrhizal plant lineages. *These results indicate that the mycorrhizal genes were present in the common ancestor of land plants, and that their functions were largely conserved during land plant evolution. The evidence presented here strongly suggests that plant-mycorrhizal fungus symbiosis was one of the key processes that contributed to the origin of land flora.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of melatonin during the culture of donor cells and cloned embryos on the in vitro developmental competence and quality of cloned porcine embryos. At concentrations of 10(-6 )M or 10(-8) M, melatonin significantly enhanced the proliferation of porcine fetal fibroblasts (PFFs), and the blastocyst rate was significantly increased in the 10(-10) M melatonin-treated donor cell group. Cloned embryo development was also improved in embryo culture medium that was supplemented with 10(-9) M or 10(-12) M melatonin. When both donor cells and cloned embryos were treated with melatonin, the cleavage rate and total cell number of blastocysts were not significantly affected; however, the blastocyst rate was increased significantly (20.0% versus 11.7%). TUNEL assays showed that combined melatonin treatment reduced the rate of apoptotic nuclei (3.6% versus 6.1%). Gene expression analysis of the apoptosis-related genes BAX, BCL2L1, and p53 showed that the expression of BCL2L1 was significantly elevated 2.7-fold relative to the control group, while the expression of BAX and p53 was significantly decreased by 3.7-fold and 23.2-fold, respectively. In addition, we detected the expression of two melatonin receptors (MT1 and MT2) in PFFs but not in porcine cloned embryos. We conclude that exogenous melatonin enhances the development of porcine cloned embryos and improves embryo quality by inhibiting p53-mediated apoptotic pathway. The proliferation of PFFs may be mediated by receptor binding, but the beneficial effects of melatonin on embryonic development may be receptor-independent, possibly through melatonins ability to directly scavenge free radicals.

Mitochondrial genomes have maintained some bacterial features despite their residence within eukaryotic cells for approximately two billion years. One of these features is the frequent presence of polycistronic operons. In land plants, however, it has been shown that all sequenced vascular plant chondromes lack large polycistronic operons while bryophyte chondromes have many of them. In this study, we provide the completely sequenced mitochondrial genome of a lycophyte, from Huperzia squarrosa, which is a member of the sister group to all other vascular plants. The genome, at a size of 413,530 base pairs, contains 66 genes and 32 group II introns. In addition, it has 69 pseudogene fragments for 24 of the 40 protein- and rRNA-coding genes. It represents the most archaic form of mitochondrial genomes of all vascular plants. In particular, it has one large conserved gene cluster containing up to 10 ribosomal protein genes, which likely represents a polycistronic operon but has been disrupted and greatly reduced in the chondromes of other vascular plants. It also has the least rearranged gene order in comparison to the chondromes of other vascular plants. The genome is ancestral in vascular plants in several other aspects: the gene content resembling those of charophytes and most bryophytes, all introns being cis-spliced, a low level of RNA editing, and lack of foreign DNA of chloroplast or nuclear origin.

Semen-derived enhancer of viral infection(SEVI) is a peptide fragment (PAP248-286) from prostatic acid phosphatase(PAP), which can enhance human immunodeficiency virus infection. The mechanisms of SEVI include: (1) SEVI with several cationic amino acid residues reduced electrostatic repulsion between HIV virus and the target cells; (2) The disorder state of SEVI in the human body fluids was helpful to the interaction between virus and the target cell membranes; (3) SEVI could capture HIV particles directly and speed the velocity of virus on the surface of the target cells and improve adsorption and fusion. Currently, the substances of inhibiting SEVI activity include: EGCG from green tea, small molecule compound of aminoquinoline Surfen, ThT analogs BTA-EG6. Those compounds might block the combination of HIV and SEVI or prevent the formation of amyloid fibers, and then reduce the enhancement of SEVI. The studies on the biological characteristics and mechanisms of SEVI have a big benefit for the prevention and treatment of HIV infection.

EphB3 suppresses non-small-cell lung cancer metastasis via a PP2A/RACK1/Akt signalling complex.

Eph receptors are implicated in regulating the malignant progression of cancer. Here we find that despite overexpression of EphB3 in human non-small-cell lung cancer, as reported previously, the expression of its cognate ligands, either ephrin-B1 or ephrin-B2, is significantly downregulated, leading to reduced tyrosine phosphorylation of EphB3. Forced activation of EphB3 kinase in EphB3-overexpressing non-small-cell lung cancer cells inhibits cell migratory capability in vitro as well as metastatic seeding in vivo. Furthermore, we identify a novel EphB3-binding protein, the receptor for activated C-kinase 1, which mediates the assembly of a ternary signal complex comprising protein phosphatase 2A, Akt and itself in response to EphB3 activation, leading to reduced Akt phosphorylation and subsequent inhibition of cell migration. Our study reveals a novel tumour-suppressive signalling pathway associated with kinase-activated EphB3 in non-small-cell lung cancer, and provides a potential therapeutic strategy by activating EphB3 signalling, thus inhibiting tumour metastasis.

Chronic ulcer of the lower extremities amounts for a grave and serious problem for public health. Western medicine focuses on controlling infection, improving blood circulation, surgical debridement, skin grafting, etc, but there are bottlenecks in the treatment. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a long history and a legacy of sound clinical efficacy in this area. TCM has developed a unique, effective external theory, and a large number of topical prescriptions and external technology. Through this research, a safe and effective treatment protocol of TCM for chronic ulcer of the lower extremities can be formed. To this end, during Chinas "Eleventh Five-Year" Plan, special research committees and projects on TCM external treatments and external technologies were established. This study on ulcer of the lower extremities constitutes one of the major research topics.

In these cases, our algorithms are trying their best to display videos with relevant content, which can sometimes result in matched videos with only a slight relation.
