Jianan Qu

Jianan Qu is a professor of Biomedical Engineering Program, Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He received BS in optical engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology and PhD in optics science from Chinese Academy of Sciences. After that he worked as post-doctoral fellow in University of California at Irvine and British Columbia Cancer Research Centre, and as a staff scientist with Ontario Cancer Institute.

During Dr. Qu’s post-doctoral training he developed a keen focus on research in biophotoincs, an emerging field of science and technology, representing the convergence of photonics with the life sciences. The newly emerging optical microscopy tools promise to make major contributions in visualizing biological processes. Qu’s Lab is dedicated to develop novel and powerful optical bio-imaging techniques and to apply them to unravel dynamic behaviors of bio-molecules in live cells and organisms.

He is elected fellows of OPTICA (formerly Optical Society of America) and SPIE (Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers). His major research contributions have been in the development of advanced optical technology for biological research and medical diagnosis.
