Nicholas B. Bèchet

Nicholas B. Bèchet is a PhD student enrolled in Biomedicine under the Experimental Brain Research track at the Department of Experimental Medical Science at Lund University. He received a BSc in Medicine specialising in Molecular Medicine, Biophysics and Neurophysiology from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and a MSc Cum laude in Cognitive Neuroscience specialising in Memory and Plasticity from Radboud University in the Netherlands.

During his training in The Netherlands Nicholas worked in the lab of Dr. Nael Nadif Kasri where he explored a human model for Kabuki Syndrome (KS) using glutamatergic neurons derived from patient IPSC's and micro-electrode arrays to identify neuronal network activity aberrations in KS. In 2018 Nicholas moved to the newly-established lab of Dr Iben Lundgaard, in Lund, Sweden. Here he works on developing new techniques and models to study the glymphatic system, a brain wide waste clearance system implicated in the clearance of amyloid-beta and other potentially neurotoxic peptides. While in Lund Nicholas has set up an optical clearing and light sheet imaging pipeline to study the glymphatic system and has also developed the first pig model to study the system.
