Roberto Caciuffo
Roberto G. M. Caciuffo is leading the Advanced Nuclear Knowledge Unit of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC). He received a M.Sc. degree in Nuclear Engineering in 1980 from the Polytechnic of Turin (Italy). Later that year he joined the Institute Laue-Langevin in Grenoble where he was awarded a Marie Curie Fellowship of the European Commission. In 1983 he discussed his thesis on Solid State Physics at the University of Parma and became a contract professor at the University of Ancona and a member of the college of teachers of the doctoral school in Physics of the University of Bologna. Winner of the 1984 national competition for associate professors at Italian universities, he works as visiting scientist at the Institute for Transuranium Elements in Germany from 1986 to 1987, and in 1989 he joins the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK) as Italy's spokesperson at the ISIS neutron source. In 2001 he became a full professor of experimental physics at the Marche University, before joining the JRC (Karlsruhe, Germany) in 2005. Caciuffo has worked as visiting scientists for extended periods in several research centres, including the Départment de Recherche Fondamentale, Centre d'Etudes Nucléaires de Grenoble, the Laboratoire Léon Brillouin near Paris, and the Atomic Research Centre of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as an expert advisor of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He has carried out experiments at neutron and synchrotron radiation scattering centres around the world, including ILL, ISIS, NIST, LLB, Risoe, MLZ, ESRF, Diamond, and Spring8. He is currently the director of the International School on Neutron Scattering and Instrumentation of the Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture in Erice. Caciuffo has been a member of science advisory boards and proposal selection committees of several national and international organizations worldwide, and served in the advisory and program committees of numerous conference series. For some years he served as National Delegate for Italy at the COST (European Cooperation in Scientific and Technical Research) Technical Committee on Materials Science, as member of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) Scientific Advisory Committee for the in-kind contribution to the European Spallation Source in Lund, and as reviewer for the Italian Ministry for Science and Education.
Caciuffo's scientific career has been focussed on the study of magnetic correlations in f-electron systems and of quantum phenomena in molecular nanomagnets. He authored over 300 research publications in peer-reviewed journals, a few hundred conference contributions, and two books on general Physics. He is a member of the World Federation of Scientists.
