Usando uma estratégia de pilotagem de um animal pode usar cálculos geométricos para determinar os rumos e distâncias a lugares em seu ambiente, enquanto usando uma estratégia de dead reckoning pode integrar sinais gerados por seus movimentos anteriores para retornar uma localização apenas a esquerda. Embora não haja evidências consideráveis de que o hipocampo está envolvido na pilotagem (O'Keefe e Nadel, 1978; O'Keefe e Speakman, 1987), há também evidências de comportamento (Whishaw et al, 1997;. Whishaw e Maaswinkel, 1998; Maaswinkel e Whishaw, 1999), modelagem (Samsonovich e McNaughton, 1997), e eletrofisiológicas (O'Mare et al, 1994;. Sharp et al, 1995;. Taube e Burton, 1995; Blair e Sharp, 1996; McNaughton et al ., 1996; Wiener, 1996; Golob e Taube, 1997) estudos que a formação do hipocampo está envolvido em conta inoperante. A contribuição relativa do hipocampo para as duas formas de navegação ainda é incerto, entretanto. Normalmente, é difícil ter certeza de que um animal está usando uma pilotagem versus uma estratégia conta inoperante, porque os animais são muito flexíveis na sua utilização de estratégias e dicas (Etienne et al, 1996;. Dudchenko et al, 1997;. Martin et al ., 1997; Maaswinkel e Whishaw, 1999).
