Clinical Skills

Welcome to JoVE Science Education, the revolutionary video database dedicated to teaching laboratory fundamentals through simple, easy to understand video demonstrations.

Essentials of Physical Examinations I

JoVE's premier Clinical Skills collection provides the foundation for performing physical exams. The collection begins by introducing several universal concepts such as inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation. Techniques for measuring blood pressure and other vital signs are then demonstrated. Finally, the collection culminates with key pulmonary and cardiovascular physical exam techniques that can greatly assist in bedside diagnosis.

Essentials of Physical Examinations II

JoVE Clinical Skills becomes more specialized in the second edition of the series. First, we provide methodology for performing the HEENT exams. We then proceed to demonstrate a series of abdominal exams, including the assessment of acute abdominal pain. Finally, the collection delves into some sensitive procedures such as the male rectal exam, comprehensive breast assessment and evaluation of female pelvic structures.

Essentials of Physical Examinations III

JoVE's third installment of Clinical Skills covers physical examination of two major systems in our body: neurological and musculoskeletal. The neuro exam videos illustrate evaluation of the cranial, motor and sensory nerves. Other videos demonstrate inspection, palpation, and range of motion, strength, and special tests involved in assessment of musculoskeletal regions from neck to feet. In addition to exhibiting the maneuvers used while evaluating these systems, these videos also explain the relevant anatomy, the rationale behind the steps, and the interpretation of the exam findings.

Essentials of Emergency Medicine and Critical Care

JoVE's fourth Clinical Skills collection delves into a wide range of procedures employed in emergency and intensive care settings. A subset of these videos illustrates basic life support methods like CPR, defibrillation, and rescue breathing. Other videos cover common procedures performed during emergency situations, such as cardiac tamponade, orbital compartment syndrome, extreme airway obstruction, tension pneumothorax, pleural effusion, and shoulder dislocation. We also demonstrate arterial line placement, which is a highly important method used in critically ill patients, in order to monitor intra-arterial blood pressure. Lastly, we provide videos for various techniques used to establish vascular access via the intraosseous space and the peripheral/central veins.

Essentials of Nursing Skills

JoVE's Essentials of Nursing Skills demonstrates medication preparation and administration via several anatomical routes. In addition to methodology, these videos highlight important safety checks, considerations, and dosage calculations. They also call attention to common mistakes associated with improper medication administration. Basic protocols, such as inserting and removing a peripheral IV line are also covered.
