アメリカの生化学者ロジャーTsienは緑色蛍光タンパク質（GFP）の発見とその開発のためのマーティンChalfieと下村脩と化学、2008年のノーベル賞を共有した。 Tsienは劇的に増加した蛍光、増加した光安定性、および488 nmの（FITCをマッチング）への主要な励起ピークのシフト、その結果、野生型GFPを改善。
