Amerikanische Biochemiker Roger Tsien teilten sich die 2008 der Nobelpreis in Chemie mit Martin Chalfie und Osamu Shimomura für die Entdeckung und die Entwicklung des Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP). Tsien dramatisch verbessert die Wildtyp-GFP was zu einer erhöhten Fluoreszenz, erhöhte Photostabilität, und eine Verschiebung in der großen Erregung peak to 488 nm (Matching FITC).
