Para além da óbvia importância médica para compreender e tratar doenças da retina, o desenvolvimento da retina de vertebrados continua a funcionar como um sistema modelo importante e elegante para compreender a determinação de células neuronais do tipo e da diferenciação 1-16. A retina neural é composto por seis tipos de células discretas (gânglio, fotorreceptores amácrinas, horizontal, células bipolares e células gliais de Müller) dispostos em camadas estereotipados, um padrão que é largamente conservada entre todos os vertebrados 12,14-18.
Enquanto estudava a retina no embrião intacto desenvolvimento é claramente necessária para a compreensão de como este órgão complexo desenvolve a partir de uma saliência do cérebro anterior em uma estrutura de camadas, há muitas questões que beneficiam from empregando abordagens utilizando cultura de células primária de presumíveis células da retina 7,19-23.
