Hipertensão ocular crônica é induzida pelo uso de fotocoagulação a laser da malha trabecular em rato olhos. A pressão intra-ocular (IOP) é elevada durante vários meses após o tratamento com laser. A diminuição da acuidade visual e sensibilidade ao contraste de animais experimentais são monitorados por meio do teste optomotor.
Glaucoma, frequentemente associada com a pressão intra-ocular elevada (PIO), é uma das principais causas de cegueira. Buscou-se estabelecer um modelo do rato de hipertensão ocular para imitar alta tensão humana glaucoma. Aqui iluminação laser é aplicado ao limbo corneano para photocoagulate o escoamento do humor aquoso, induzindo fechamento angular. As mudanças de pressão intra-ocular são monitorizadas utilizando um tonómetro rebote antes e após o tratamento com laser.
