Tongue

The tongue, an accessory digestive organ, forms the floor of the oral cavity and extends into the oropharynx.
It is composed of two types of skeletal muscles&#8212;intrinsic and extrinsic&#8212;encased in a layer of mucous membrane.
Intrinsic tongue muscles, which have no bone attachment, are located entirely within the tongue and aid in shaping it for speech and swallowing.
The extrinsic muscles originate from the skull bones and soft palate, extend to the tongue, and help the tongue change its position.
The lingual frenulum, a mucosal fold, anchors the tongue to the floor of the mouth and limits its backward movement.
The median sulcus divides the tongue into two symmetrical halves on the surface.
In addition to its roles in gustation and speech, the tongue shapes chewed food into a swallowable bolus and pushes it down to the pharynx.

Intrinsic Muscles: These muscles are entirely within the tongue and are responsible for its fine movements, including changing its shape for speech and swallowing. The four intrinsic muscles are the superior longitudinal, inferior longitudinal, transverse, and vertical muscles.
Parts of the Tongue and Papillae
The tongue is divided into two main parts: the anterior (front) two-thirds known as the oral part, and the posterior (back) one-third, known as the pharyngeal part. The oral part is the mobile part visible in the mouth, while the pharyngeal part is the fixed part towards the throat.
The surface of the tongue is covered with small bumps called papillae, which house the taste buds.
There are four types of papillae:
Filiform Papillae: These are the most numerous and don&#39;t contain taste buds. They provide the tongue with its rough texture.
Fungiform Papillae: These are mushroom-shaped and scattered among the filiform papillae. They contain taste buds.
Circumvallate Papillae: These are large papillae found at the back of the oral part of the tongue. They also contain taste buds.
Foliate Papillae: These are located on the sides of the tongue and contain taste buds.
Function of the Tongue
Swallowing: The tongue plays a critical role in swallowing by helping to form a bolus (ball of food) and propelling it into the pharynx.
Speech: The tongue is essential for articulation. It helps modulate the flow of air through the mouth to produce different sounds.
Gustation (Taste): The taste buds within the papillae allow us to perceive five basic tastes: sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami.
Tongue Diseases
Various conditions can affect the tongue, including:
Ankyloglossia (Tongue-tie): This is a congenital condition where the frenulum is too short, restricting tongue movement. It can interfere with feeding in infants and speech in older children.
Oral Thrush: This is a fungal infection that causes white patches on the tongue and other parts of the mouth.
Glossitis: This is inflammation of the tongue, often causing it to appear smooth, glossy, and red.

The tongue is a muscular organ in the oral cavity that helps with swallowing, speech, taste, and disease detection. It sits in the mouth and is held in place by the lingual frenulum, a fold of mucous membrane that attaches it to the floor of the mouth. The base of the tongue connects with the hyoid bone, the mandible, the styloid processes, and the pharynx.

The tongue contains eight muscles that work together to move and shape it. The extrinsic muscles begin outside the tongue and create its larger movements. These include the genioglossus, which protrudes and depresses the tongue, the hyoglossus, which depresses and retracts it, the styloglossus, which elevates and retracts it, and the palatoglossus, which elevates the back of the tongue.

The intrinsic muscles are found entirely within the tongue. They control fine movements and change the tongue’s shape during speech and swallowing. These muscles are the superior longitudinal, inferior longitudinal, transverse, and vertical muscles.

The tongue has two main parts. The anterior two-thirds is the oral part, which is the mobile section seen in the mouth. Content elaboration: The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract (alimentary canal) as well as various accessory organs including the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The digestive system processes and supplies the molecules needed to sustain the living tissues within the body through the absorption of nutrients. Six major functions of the digestive system include secretion, ingestion, mechanical processing, enzymatic digestion, absorption and excretion. The lining of the digestive system protects surrounding tissues from the mechanical and enzymatic stresses of the digestive process. Processes of the digestive system include the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules which are then absorbed by the digestive tract. Specific actions within the digestive system include mastication, peristalsis, segmentation and the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for digestion. The metabolic functions of the accessory organs play strategic roles in the breakdown of food products, the maintenance of glucose levels within the blood and the regulation of homeostasis in the body. Indigestible material is excreted as waste. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, conditions such as gallstones, heartburn, ulcers, dehydration, diarrhea, cirrhosis and cancers of the digestive system. Investigations are used to understand and explain the digestive system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
